For those keeping track, as of VMS V7.3-1:

ALP $ help Sys_Parameters DEVICE_NAMING

SYS_PARAMETERS

DEVICE_NAMING

(Alpha only) DEVICE_NAMING is a bit mask indicating whether port
allocation classes are used in forming SCSI device names.

Following is the bit definition:

Bit Definition

0 If 1, enable new naming.
1 Must be 0. This bit is reserved for use by Compaq.

For more information about port allocation classes, see OpenVMS
Cluster Systems.

Apparently the forbidden bit 1 is the critical item for getting the
VMS device names to agree with the console device names.

If anyone knows of horrible things which will happen when
DEVICE_NAMING is set to 2 (instead of 3 or -1), please tell me now.
Otherwise, I'll pretend I'm in good shape.
