Hello
I have the following VAXs
1 3100-10
1 4000-100A
The model 10 has the GPX graphics board inside, that will allow me to
run Softpc. The 100a is connected to a VT1300. The 10 is just sooo
slow that I moved Softpc over to the 100a. To my shock the 100a will
not run Softpc. I thought for sure the SPX board inside the 1300 would
support
the fonts used in Softpc. So I thought that since the vt1300 is really
a tone down 3100 I replaced the SPX board with the GPX board. Well the
1300 will not boot, well I get the opcom messages stating the software
load was good but no login screen. So my options are
1. go back to the 10
2. find a xterm that will support the GPX
I would prefer to go with option 2.
tks for any input

I'm clueless about a VT1300, have only a VXT1200 at home. The VXT1200
looks as if it is a stripped VAXstation.
The box is fairly similar to a VAXstation 4000 VLC and the way it
boots looks familiar. I'm sure its firmware, given the
price per MB in those days, only supports the hardware DEC put in it
at the factory. I think the VXT1300 has the same
limitations. With the available hardware I think you're stuck,
performance wise. A way out may be running an X server on
another platform, say a pc with linux. If you want to stay on VAX
hardware then you might try to find yourself a
VAXstation 4000 model 60, 90(A) or 96. Even the -60 outperforms the
3100 and a -90A will impress you: it's twice as fast
as a VAX 4000-100.
