A couple of days ago Paul Smedley released a compile of gs8.70.
Apploads, please! (Mine, I already did. ;-)

What I see: it is now capable to process PDF files (v8.64 would choke
on non-trivial PDF files). In particular, if you need to work
intensively with a particular PDF file which is not suppored by old
AcroRead's, you can convert it (as in

ps2pdf INI-PDF-NAME CONVERTED-PDF_NAME

). In my (very limited) testing, I saw size reductions up to 3x, and
the result was viewable in AcroRead v4. To be absolutely sure that it
has no features not supported by v4, do

ps2pdf13 INI-PDF-NAME CONVERTED-PDF_NAME

(use ps2pdf14 for AcroRead v5 - in its infinite wisdom, Adobe
versioned flavors of PDF with offset 1 w.r.t. versions of Acrobat...).

Hope this helps,
Ilya

P.S. Of course, for short browsing you can use GhostView instead of
AcroRead; however, I consider document navigation in AcroRead
much less distracting...
