I have a Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATALink Controller to which is attached
a Seagate Barracuda ST3160023AS 7200.7 SATA HD and a Plextor PX-708A
DVD/CD drive. Since 1 TB drives are so inexpensive I'm thinking of
upgrading the HD (specifically the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD102UJ 1TB
which NewEgg has for $75). However, the one concern I have is that the
specifications for the Silicon Image controller states that it supports
SATA up to 1.5 Gbps, but it seems that all of the 1 TB drives are SATA
3.0 Gbps. Does this matter?

I read somewhere that SATA2 devices work with SATA1 controllers at SATA1
speeds ie 1.5Gbps.

I do not have any experience of this to be able to confirm it.

Many SATA drives have jumpers or some other means of throttling them
back to 1.5Gbps. The Seagate SATA drives I've purchased have all come
with this jumper in place.

I prever Seagates (due to warranty policy difference). I got 1.5TB
for about 100$ a couple of months ago (but Seagates are rare on
xpbargains; quite often one must monitor for a couple of weeks).

Why not look on Wikipedia before posting?

Anyway, my Seagate is attached to a shitty 1.5Gb/sec controller. (It has
no jumpers; no need for a jumper when controller is ALREADY
1.5Gb/sec.)

Hope this helps,
Ilya
