4200ms delay every 5sec

Yesterday one of the computers here got in a very funny state. The
first symptom was major sluggishness of ssh connections.
Investigation (today) shows that *exactly* each 5th ping got delayed
(almost always by 4200ms); the rest got times as expected (10ms-50ms
depending on the "distance").

Exiting all programs "launched after startup" did not change a thing
(veryfied by process listings). Other computers on the network
behaved without this problem.
Fortunately, it so happened that at this moment I could reboot the
system without much data loss - and this fixed the problem. (Hard
reset after shutdown, but no power cycle.)
Anyone knowing what it could be, and whether it is fixable without
reboot?
