Basically, using
mplayer -dvd-device x: dvdnav://
or
mplayer -dvd-device x: dvd://#
works fine if I have an ISO file mounted to drive S: (for example) using the
NetDrive ISO plugin. It also works if I have the raw directory structure
containing VIDEO_TS mounted using the NetDrive LOCAL plugin.
However, as soon as I burn the ISO to a real DVD and try to play it in my actual
DVD drive... this happens:
Playing dvdnav://.
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 4.1.3
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdnav: Can't seek to block 32
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file 'E:\Home/.dvdnav/.map'
libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256
libdvdnav:DVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO failed
libdvdread: Can't seek to block 256
libdvdnav:DVDOpenFileUDF:UDFFindFile /VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.BUP failed
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
libdvdnav: vm: failed to read VIDEO_TS.IFO
Couldn't open DVD device: h: (I/O error)

Apologies, misspoke that last part. It _DOES_ work on the laptop. The
error occurs on my desktop system only.

Have they both got the same version of OS2CDROM.DMD?

I get basically the same results. Actually my newer DVD writer gets an
I/O error no matter what excepting a couple of burned DVD's someone gave me.
With my older DVD reader I get the same results when playing straight
from DVD. Instead I rip an ISO with dvddao+dvdcss.dll and feed the ISO
to MPlayer which works fine.
Dave
ps Linux is the same, Win2k seemed to play fine from my writer with the
included software.
Is this possibly a result of the region settings on the drive? Does it
allow region-free playback?

I also get this with discs I've burned, but not with commercial dvds.
I noticed that, according to their drive object properties, the
home-made dvds are CDFS whereas the commercial DVDs are UDF, and
assumed that that was the reason.

What are you using to burn DVDs? - looks like it is giving you VideoCDs
instead :-)
I do not burn many DVDs myself but dvddao options include formatting UDF
during the process.

Hmm, no they don't. The laptop is using 10.163, the desktop has 10.157.
The desktop has all the latest storage driver updates listed by ECSMT,
though. Where does 10.163 come from, again?

I doubt it. For one thing, I authored some of these DVDs myself, and
I certainly didn't put any region encoding on them.
Anyway, why would it work when I mount the DVD using Netdrive LOCAL
plugin, but not directly? I think if it was a region problem, it
wouldn't work either way.

Are you using the latest OS2CDROM.DMD ? At least 10.157.
Are you using the latest UDF.IFS ? At least 2.1.4
And make sure to place UDF.IFS before CDFS.IFS.

I use a variety of apps and I have no way of telling which wrote what.
I suspect, though, that the discs in question were produced using
DVDDecrypter on Windows, using an early version which didn't allow the
book type to be specified.

I use write-once discs which are formatted on-the-fly, if they're
formatted at all. I certainly don't tell dvddao to format them.

Yes. 10.163 (now).

Yup. Using 2.1.6.
> And make sure to place UDF.IFS before CDFS.IFS.
Yes, it's there.

Thanks. It was installed, but OS2CDROM must've been backlevelled by
something else. I (re)installed it and I'm at 10.163 now.
It doesn't help, though. :(
