Installing and running UEFI DUET
|
| |
One cannot boot IBM OS/2 directly from EFI firmware. IBM OS/2 is only bootable in the old PC/AT way. Maybe the osFree people working on their FREELDR will work on a version that can run on EFI systems. (If you're reading this: You won't have to worry about switching into protected mode, using mini-FSDs, enabling A20 gates, or any of that chaff. The... more »

Master Boot Record with EFI partition table support
|
| |
I came across an EDD proposal the other day, for adding a new flag to the EFI (so-called "GUID") partition table. The proposal hypothesized a master boot record that understood EFI partition tables. It would enable machines with PC/AT style firmwares to bootstrap operating systems on discs partitioned with an EFI partition table. (The MBR... more »

Boot Manager with EFI partition table support and LVM metadata support
|
| |
For those of you who have been playing with CHKVOL, FORMAT, and VMDISK: You've had all of the things bar one for running my Boot Manager. Unless you exercised your curiosity, you maybe didn't realize that you had a SYS command. That, and two more files, are enough to get you my Boot Manager. The two additional files are now available at the same... more »

LVM partition table extensions
|
| |
My Boot Manager was already capable of taking partition names (for the MBR partitioning scheme) from the IBM Boot Manager MBR partition table extensions. Thanks to information provided by Alex Taylor, I've now updated it so that it uses the IBM LVM metadata, falling back to the IBM Boot Manager partition table extensions if the IBM LVM metadata aren't... more »

formatting to FAT32
|
| |
...Although not using FAT is, indeed, the better route here, I mention this for completeness: I have a Pure 32-Bit FORMAT replacement that will (high-level) format FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32 volumes (where "volume" includes both disc partitions managed by the DASD manager and volume image files created... more »

AMD releases open source boot code
|
| |
...Once again: It's not an operating system or an operating system loader. It's replacement firmware. There won't be any "tapping into interfaces" because it isn't a loader. It's what loaders (the so-called "payload") run on top of and use. And what's this "our loader" business? I for one don't have any stake... more »

Whither LVM replacement?
|

...The screen shots were mockups? ...You should see mine. I might send the Progress-o-Matic URL to you, in fact, just so that you can. (-:
