This is my perennial question, will flavors thereof ever appear?

Will this newsgroup die in 2012?

As you may recall the source code for 4DOS and its successors (4OS2, 4NT,
TCMD, TCMd32, and TCC - list not necessarily complete) is copyrighted by JP
Software, Inc. The use of programs based on the 4DOS source code has been
released for free use on FreeDOS platforms, and the source code made
available for that purpose. I had in the long past days had successfully
used my licensed copy of 4DOS in the PC-DOS emulator of Solaris Unix
platforms. However, it is a commercial product, and its copyright owner does
not see a viable market in the POSIX-type environments. Should someone
desire to attempt to adopt the code to the POSIX environment, feel free to
contact JP Software, and negotiate for a license. See their website.
Personally I think that the real market would by through system
administrators of companies which operate both POSIX and Windows platforms,
allowing them to share software.

In a nutshell: only if you get Rex Conn's agreement to do it yourself.
