I'm trying to install Win95B on a P4 2.0 GHz, 1 Gig RAM Compaq
desktop. This machine had XP on it, running fine, so I know there's no
hardware problems.

The installation goes fine until the final reboot. I get the "Windows
will run for the first time" message then a DOS screen saying there
isn't enough memory to run Win95. himem is loading fine. it won't
load in safe mode. the only thing i can get is command line, safe
mode or regular. i checked mem (man, this is taking me back...), got
something like 580K free of conventional. tried rem-ing things out in
config sys and autoexec, but to no avail.

anybody got an idea?

i've tried re-installing it a couple of times but no go...

thank you.

From a site: "Windows may not start if your computer has 1
gigabyte (GB) or more, of RAM memory installed. Also you may
receive the following error message when you try to start your
computer: Insufficient memory to initialize Windows."

Try:

Thank you.

Now I get a different error message, so there's progress.
:-)

I now get "error initializing IOS" or something like it. It's the
french version of Win95, so I'm guesstimating what the message would
be in english.
