I have to install VC++ & the XP DDK on a new computer. Back in WinNT days
there was a mandatory installation order and IIRC there was a preferred
order in Win2K. What's the situation in WinXP?

TIA

XP DDK has all tools, and is fully capable of building anything you like
without any MSVC installed. Older DDKs are still dependent on MSVC and
PSDK, though only for a batch file in the case of PSDK.

If you are installing XP DDK, if you won't be using MSVC as your editor, you
don't need MSVC at all.

w2k DDK is not dependent on PSDK at all.
