apache.org rooted

sample defacement mirror: http://66.92.75.28/~vladimir/themes-org.html

Don't think he left backdoors in code up on sourceforge and apache?

think again...

As linux becomes more widely used, it'll be targeted more (like what is
happening to IIS, used more so targeted more)

I like his comment about not revealing security holes...

(a copy posted below in case the mirror is slashdotted):
The site's "shell server" was compromised May 22 after a SourceForge
employee logged on to an outside Internet service provider that had already
been taken over by the intruder, said Pat McGovern, site director of
SourceForge.net. When the staff member logged on to SourceForge remotely,
the intruder captured the password.

Well some of that is true, I mean I did trojan ssh but I did it about 5
months ago, so kudos to the admin you sir are awesome..

"What happened was the (ISP) was compromised and had not known it," McGovern
said, adding that the site's administrator quickly noticed the intruder and
shut systems down. "Basically we had to go through and rebuild the machine,
and then we checked the log file of everyone who used the machine."

hrm I guess that could also be considered true, if by true you mean, finding
out every box on your network is owned 5 months after the fact and only due
to my own boredom that consisted of me ircing it infront of the admin, by
the way good job of auditing your network, wait thats just too much sarcasm
for one sentence..

After the attack, VA removed the shell service until workers could reinstall
the software and data on the server. The shell server allowed SourceForge
members to type commands into the system remotely. On Thursday, the company
posted an alert that the shell server couldn't be used because of an
"unscheduled maintenance event."

It also allowed me to sniff my way onto apache.org and sourceforge webserver
and leave all sorts of goodies in the code..

In this case, they only got into a shell server," McGovern said.

Hey, theres no disputing that, I mean.. wait.. Whats this I'm defacing ?

The company also decided to shut down its "compile farm," a collection of
computers running different operating systems on which SourceForge
developers can test their software.

Why would they shut down other boxes, if only the shell server was hacked ?

Although illicit modifications to the programming projects are a concern,
McGovern said the intruder didn't get that far.
oh come now, you're just being silly..

Its ok thought I dont blame you guys, I mean atleast you admited to being
schooled, thats more then I can say for akamai, but thats a different story
all together.. But never the less, I'd like to thank valinux.. apache..
akamai and ofcourse exodus without their poor security and refusal to make
security breaches known to the public I wouldnt be sitting atop a mountain
of roots and oodles of proprietary software.. This is the fluffy bunny
signing of.. beep..

Exodus Security (DOH!)
"Exodus operates a multi-layer defense strategy for all customer data
elements and security infrastructure environments,"
company officials said in a statement.
"So, in this case only an outer-layer Web site was defaced, no inner layer
security facilities were affected."

5 *months* ?
If this is true, then he could've planted a lot of back doors in a lot of
successful OS projects.
And if he's smart, he did it subtly, I pity the auditors.
It's hard enough to track bugs, it's harder to find intetionly inserted
bugs.
Especially in C/C++.

BTW, what is this going to do to Linux's security insurance rates?

Remind me not to use SpeakEasy.Net. Even though they use
Apache/1.3.9 (Unix) PHP/4.0.3pl1 PHP/3.0.14 mod_perl/1.21 on Linux,
(old version of Apache) it sounds like it might be run by lamers.

By the way, you're digging for and posting this data on an NT
advocacy group is a bit strange. You could have at least cross-posted
to cola.

I also note that Apache placed a prominent notice of the attack.
Good for them! And note that the source code modules can be audited
by comparison. From Apache:

Audit Report.
========================================================================

Directories are listed as verified when the directory and everything below it
has been compared to an external or backup source dated prior to May 17
that has not been rsyncd with apache.org, or when the files can be compared
to an externally verifiable signature.

All of the release files with signatures have already been verified.

Yeah apache.org- and the last one a stolen password- and not Apache. You

You seem to forget that www.microsoft.com has never been defaced. While
it's true that several microsoft sites in foreign countries have been
defaced, it should be noted that those subsidiaries are their own company,
and are run very different than microsoft in the US. Foreign subsidiaries
often have complete control over their own operations (for instance, a few
years back when IBM officials in (IIRC) argentina were arrested and
convicted of bribery).

But in any event, I am not talking about sites being run by apache, those
get hacked all the time. I'm talking about apache.org itself. If they
can't control their own security, how can they hope for anyone else to?

I love some of the people who actually brag about
how some operating systems are "never comprimised".

Somehow, I think that when an operating system has
a userbase size that is just about on par with the
significance of a speck of maggot filth, it's safe
to say that there isn't much incentive for an
exploitation of it.

I've actually heard people brag that their SCO
OpenServer boxen had never been owned. *sigh*
I could just hear the news report now...

virus attack that occurred around 5:30am yesterday

ANd you want us to trust these same unpaid volunteers? They should write the
OS you prefer? They should write the security software that goes into this

Yes you want people that know that what they're doing is important to them.
Please read the following article on open source:

http://www.sdmagazine.com/articles/2001/0105/0105a/0105a.htm

Here's the teaser lines for it:

Is Open Source for You? May 2001

Apache, Cocoon and Linux aren't just useful programs, they're
best-of-breed. Some of the more intemperate free software
boosters, intoxicated by this success, claim that proprietary
software is obsolete and that it's immoral to keep your
source code secret. Well, maybe. Part 1 of 2.

Important to them this week. Next week? Maybe they'll be protesting a rate
hike at Star Bucks or protesting the building of a clean, safe, efficient
nuclear power plant in California.

And if these people screw up? What can you do? Send them nasty e-mails
asking for your money back? Whoops, what money? And what if one of the chief
authors of the project you DEPEND on decides it's time to graduate high
school finally and discovers girls - or his geocities.com support website is
taken down for posting .MP3s? What will you do then, you might not even be

Speaking of spelling, where did you acquire
your unique grammatical skills, young man?

You're saying that since programmers, who
volunteer their time to do what they do out of
a labor of love, are more competent, simply
because they aren't expecting payment for it?

How the hell did you every reach this dain-
bramaged conclusion?

If these people are so good at what they do,
then why aren't software development companies
snapping them up left and right? Why do I keep
hearing about a severe shortage in talented people?
Are you suggesting that they have too much integrity
to accept compensation for their work?

Bullshit.

I create 3D animation for a living. I'm good
at what I do, and also get paid nicely to do
it (self-employed, actually). I know plenty
of people who create 3D graphics simply because
"they love doing it". Most of them suck at it...
badly.

So, tell us, how the hell do you know that
the engineers at Microsoft don't also love
what they do? Because they get paid to do
it? Because they don't run around
tossing flowers on people, crooning
"knowledge belongs to the people, man!"?

Allow me to foist some wisdom on that pointy
little head of yours, sonny. Many people in
this country are actually good at what they do
for a living, even _WHILE_ they are getting
paid to do it. It's called a "career".

Your assertion proves nothing. It is based
on supposition, and assumptions that you have
pulled from a certain oriface.

The account I read (the one written by fb himself) said that he
had used a known exploit of SSH to get into apache.org.

1. He compromised the ISP about 5 months before using several known
exploits (undisclosed).
2. Using a trojaned SSH, he sniffed many passwords and managed to get
himself a sourceforge administrator shell account
3. He trojaned SSH there as well, from what I understand, and sniffed
even more accounts of people on SF and people in the same datacenter.
4. Apparently, from there, he was able to garner all sorts of informatin
and managed to compromise Exodus' lax security.
(from here on out is from Apache's own account of the events)
5. He was then able to gain an apache.org shell account.
6. He tried using a known bugzilla exploit, but that failed.
7. He then was able to use a known SSH exploit to gain root.
(by the admin's own admission, he built the new SSH version, but never
installed it!)

Those are the facts as best I could determine them from several sources.

So the problems were:
a.) several known exploits which were exploited in the ISP (presumably
Linux)
b.) Administrator errors and lax security (ISP, exodus, and apache.org)
c.) exploits in SSH

Gosh. It seems like only yesterday every redfaced MS exec in the
world was busy trying to convince folks that the source code to
Windows had not been compromised in the latest break in to the
corporate network. Not overseas. Not a simple defacement of the kind
that happens so often these days that attrition.org has given up
trying to keep up with them. The corporate network cracked. The
crown jewels exposed.

How soon they forget.

See ya,

Of course, there's no proof that source was ever touched.
But don't let petty little things like "fats" get in your way!

So the next time someone defaces a MS site using a weak password on a front
page extension - you'll be the first to remind us that it's not a windows
problem but the employee should have kept IP security and better passwords?

Fats? Well, I suppose that could slip through your spell checker. If
you were trying to type "facts", well, then here is a fact for you.

Nobody _claimed_ the source was compromised. I certainly didn't in
the message you responded to. Erik claimed that www.microsoft.com
hasn't been defaced. I pointed out that Microsoft has suffered a much
greater compromise than simple defacement.

Setting up a strawman to knock over is a very duplicitous stunt which
makes you look very dishonest. If you're going to do that, you might
as well get a large cardboard sign (like they sail down at the corner
of Caesar Chavez and I-35) which reads "DON'T TRUST ME."

But you don't really know that, do you?

Depend how you define suffered a much greate compromise.
The damage to its reputation was much greater.

Right.

There wasn't much "hacking" involved in the MS crack. It was
more social engineering to get the employee's dial-up information.

The apache.org involved taking advantage of known exploits in
SSH among others.
