Dear Group,

I recently baught Windows7 OS installed from Dell. I have opened up
a
user account vnagrik and I am trying to set a new environment
variable
in "User Variables" section.

There are two sections in environment variables

1. User Variables
2. System Variables.

I am trying to create a new environement variable in "User Variable"
section. Then I save all settings and come out of it.

I open up a new command shell (or even shut down the computer and
restart it), and then type the command set to see all the set
environement variables. However my newly set variable is not seen in
all those variables list.

However if I create the same variable in System Variables section,
then I am able to see it.

Any solutions/suggestions, please

Thanks.

Hi,

after setting a user environment variable, did you try printing it?
Like 'echo %var_name%' ?
See this link, maybe it will help: http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/environment.htm

Thank you Zaur. Zaur’s reply definitely helped me. I have created a
“limited user” account (Named: nagrik) and for this user I want to
change the “User Variables” and not the” System Environment
Variable.” I do not find any provision in Windows7. Whenever I click
on to ‘Advanced System Setting’ tab in ‘My Computer’->Properties, the
OS asks me for the Administrator’s password and after I type in
administrator password it takes me to a screen, where the ‘User’ is no
more “nagrik”, it is now “administrator”. Thus if I change any thing
now, it affects the whole system and any chane in the “User Variables”
only affects the ‘administrator’ settings and not the current logged
in user i.e. ‘nagrik’.

My question is:

How do I change the ‘User Variables (Environment)’ for a user who has
limited permissions on Windows7 Home Premium OS?
