Problem with Word's equation editor

I apologize if this is a duplicate... but my first attempt to post this didn't show up on my server.
When I use MS-Word's Equation Editor to build a function definition, for example 'f(x) = (x - 4)^
2', everything looks normal. Save the document, close it -- and when I reopen it later, the initial
'f' has disappeared, leaving only '(x) = (x - 4)^2'.
What's going on? What causes this, and what can I do to prevent it?
MS-Word 2007 SP3 on Vista HP SP2.
