Microsoft *could* go after these companies; threaten legal action, even
a simply cease & desist letter would suffice. But of course Microsoft
doesn't care about its customers. It doesn't care about security and it
certainly doesn't care about the "user experience" it claims to cherish.
Here is another offender "Free Audio Encoder." Since Microsoft
sabotaged open source and/or free software I had to find an alternative
to Audacity.

Normally I use a Mac, but I'm traveling and my Mac is too valuable to

Yay! Microsoft Security Essentials doing its usual bang up job!

Who in the Linux community goes after folks who make "bad" programs?
In any case, I installed CutePDF:

Did not get what you did. Odd, eh?

what legal action do you think ms could go after these guys for?
...
Anything. Start small. They have the best corporate law firm in the
country on retainer.
Quite strange.
I must be faking my pictures. That's the only logical conclusion.
You have the box checked. I think you are either mixed up
about how to uncheck a box or you posted the wrong picture. I
don't know if it was you, but someone else did the same thing
and posted a picture showing the thing still checked.

I think you're doing something wrong and you're a bit
mixed up. I downloaded CutePDF writer to see and there was no
offer of the Ask toolbar. Where did you download your copy from?

I think you're doing something wrong and you're a bit
I am just trying to figure out why there is a difference. You offered one
explanation... but that is not what I was suggesting.
Curious, what made you think to take such screenshots as you were installing
it?

John
yeah, that's not how it works.
and as pointed out, you clearly have the checkbox CHECKED. ;D
Ver. 2.8; from cutepdf.com
Look again, the other boxes are not checked, but the EULA license box is.
So when I uninstall the Ask toolbar, am I violating the EULA? Oh no!
Well, I did not prove you wrong... so you are not whining.

Just to test - I uninstalled CutePDF, rebooted and reinstalled. Could not
replicate. I downloaded the Pro version (trial) and installed. No dice.
I cannot get, with the current version of CutePDF, what you showed.

I have seen this with other programs - you are on the Install the Ask
Toolbar page and you have the top checkbox checked - Accept the EULA and
install the Ask Toolbar. Yes, it is confusing and if you are not looking
you might think you are installing the desired software, but that is *not*
the case. You opted to install the Ask Toolbar (the UI is a mess though and
encourages that sort of error).
I suspect Slade and I are not getting that screen because we have installed
CutePDF in the past and unchecked that box and it remembers... but that is
just a guess. I do not recall ever getting that with CutePDF, but I used to
with Glary Utilities - same exact screen. Maybe it remembers from one
program to the next - both asking for the Ask Toolbar? Who knows...
The problem, though, is a poor UI and you not reading the screen carefully.

For fucks sake could not you just get a used macbook pro on ebay? Mine
cost me $800
and aside from the shitty old keyboard and dvd player with the mind of
its own it works ok
and does not have a glare shitscreen that's the default on newer
macbooks.
> However I'm going to keep using this machine for a while, I want to

Fuck, you gonna compare portable shit from Dell with apple? I have a 6
year old hp dv1000t and I like it just fine.
More so than the 2007 model of macbook pro 15".
I haven't seen a single decent dell laptop south of $1500 and I
haven't laid my hands on $1500+ dell:
i've got to assume they've got a single decent laptop in their lineup.
I just haven't run into any of them.
To be honest hp does not produce anything decent these days as well.
Just read of all the users
having overheating issues with the Envy and i've got to assume pro is
no better as there are fewer metal surfaces
dissipate prodigious amounts of heat quads produce.
So I'm scratching my head of where to get a decent 17" box and the
only choice seems to be apple.
Again. Sigh.
P.S. at least you could still get a decent notebook these days. If you
need a decent LCD monitor for un der $500 you're fucked:
everyone and their mother produces utter pieces of shit. ASUS VG236H
is kind of ok but it has a glare screen that's a dealbreaker for me.
I just might have to shell out $$$$ for a decent professional IPS
monitor.
I think you're doing something wrong because I'm never
asked to install the Ask Toolbar and neither are the others in
here. Just download the new version. I think you're using an old
version or lying. I tell you what. Please post the download link
where you got that file and that will tell all.
John
You have to check the box so it will install I guess. I
think something is fishy here. I asked him to post the download
link to that file or better yet maybe he could e-mail it to
someone. If he doesn't, you know he was making it up.

Doh!
Appil retards mistaking valuable for expensive.
Linux is valuable. Especially if you set it up with translucent compiz.
Search www.youtube.com for full 3D desktop with dozen screens
running simultanously large amounts of software all open at the same time
on a Linux netbook or laptop. You can keep it all open all at the same
time and switch between them and nothing slows down.
Like 5 spreadsheets, 5 open office documents, a couple of code editors
like netbeans and codeblocks, apache webserver, mysql database server,
php web site, gimp image editor, html editors like mozilla composer
or KDE komposer, Gambas Visual GUI IDE, watch a movie,
etc ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Pause the video, do the work, and then go
back to watching it. Alternatively download a hundred odd lectures
from youtube.com and bring them along for your studies during
travel time.
Now that is what I call valuable and productive, particularly when you are
stuck on a plane or a train for a couple of hours.
Open office is free, netbeans is free, codeblocks is free, apache webserver
is free, mysql database server is free, phps is free, gimp is free, mozilla
is free, kde is free, gambas is free, totem and gstreamer movie players
free, youtube-dl and firefox extension youtube download helper free,
firefox is free, compiz is free and Linux to run all that is free.
Thats what I call really really valuable.
Hey check this out. I knew I remember this same thread

pictures too. The links to the pics are dead I think.
LOL Justin says he doesn't want to get a Windows 7
computer. Guess he changed his mind. Turns out he's probably
using an old version of the program and should get the latest
version. Guess we'll know when he gives me the link.

www.cutepdf.com
Not that difficult.
Either way, it sucks; justlike everything related to Windows.
Why aren't there any similar checkboxes when installing Mac apps?
Yes, but the box you checked says "I accept the terms of the End User
License Agreement and [covered by arrow] Policy *and want to install the
Ask Toolbar*"
The boxes that are unchecked told the installer that you didn't want
Ask.com to be your browser default search provider, nor did you want your
homepage set to Ask.com.
I think the EULA is talking about the Ask toolbar's EULA, and not
CutePDF's EULA. Perhaps someone else can confirm that for me.
<snipped>
<yawn>
It's yet another cross-posting troll.
*plonk*
My guess: Mac users would not tolerate it... look at Firefox and OpenOffice.
When they came to the Mac they did not have the Mac look... and people made
it clear that was not acceptable.
At the same time, Mac users accept other areas of weaknesses... such as some
lack of options.
Each OS provides a different set of pros and cons... off the cuff thinking
here, but:
Windows:
Pros: lots of software, well known, gaming
Cons: malware, trialware / toolbar junk, probs with registry, etc.
OS X:
Pros: UI designed to benefit productivity, reduce errors, etc.
Cons: some loss of flexibility, no low-end (cheap) systems
Desktop Linux:
Pros: flexibility / configurability, price
Cons: lack of system focus, lack of commercial software
Again, those are just off the cuff.

LOL
Everyone knows Apple is asshole on the technology block. Force slave
labor in China. Big Brother tracking your moves, faulty antenna
designs, etc. The list of atrocities committed by Apple is staggering.
An incorrect guess. Nothing I've installed had any Ask
Toolbar involved. Something stinks. But the way to remedy this
is don't check the box.
John
Maybe you haven't figured out that that is the EULA for
the Ask Toolbar and NOT CutePDF. You don't click any boxes, the
next button is still clickable. Duh!
John
Exactly.
John
Yea no company that makes a desktop OS can control who
makes software for that OS. Justin blaming Microsoft and Windows

buggy as hell.
John
Fair enough.

Agreed: it stinks in that it is not consistent and the UI is miserable and
misleading, but if a user does not check the box they are fine.

You are correct... but the UI is horrid. I think it is that way on purpose,
to trick people into getting the Ask Toolbar. I have seen many people get
fooled by this (and I admit, I did too the first time I ran into it - with
Glary Utilities).

Why is it when one installs Flash on the mac there are no options to

MS could exert some influence. It wouldn't take much and it wouldn't
cost them anything. Basically this goes into contract law. If one
party makes a contract using obtuse of unclear language or wording with
the intent of tricking people, the contract is void.
MS could start complaining and telling those companies to stop using
their OS as a medium for trickery.
WTF? Any programmer could do that to you, even on a Mac. Why did you
even install the program? PDFEDIT995 has the same functionality, and
no nagware. And, you did not get any malware, just an extra browser
toolbar.
Think and act responsibly before you post such trash.

MS can't stop independent 3rd party software makers from making bad software

Maybe HP should "exert influence" against paper companies who make low grade

who make low quality flashlight batteries? Perhaps Toll Brothers and KB

You're right it doesn't offer to install Norton Security.
It offers a download to install McAfee or the Google Toolbar or
Chrome.
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
The box is already checked and if you hit download it
will start installing that POS McAfee. When exactly was the last
time you actually downloaded something?
