I am trying to install Minix on a 286 with a hard drive that has a
large number of bad sectors on it. When I ran the Minix readall, as
suggested in the manual, it only found one of the sectors. This is
rather disturbing, as when I finished the installation, cpp worked
fine for the first 10 test programs, and then was reported to not be
an executable file. So, is there a program which will do a complete
test of my hard drive and mark sectors bad, or do I need to write
my own?

diskcheck will do a complete test of your hard drive.
badblocks will mark bad sectors.
(by creating a file that "uses" these sectors).
