The book is finally out. It took a long time in production. Amazon.com
has it now. I put a link to it on the minix3.org DOCUMENTATION page.

Sorry for the delay.

Hi,

I am newbie in to the OS field. I was interested in studying MINIX.
Unfortunately the 3rd edition of the book is not yet available here in
India. Only the second edition is available in book stores.

I wanted to know, is it possible to get a good understanding of MINIX 3
with the 2nd edition of the book? Has the design changed drastically,
that I cannot use the 2nd edition of the book at all.

Thanks in advance

Regards,
Suresh

Hi!

well, my "project group" took a look at the Minix3
source code and we also used the minix2 book, but
lately we skipped reading the book, because in some
parts there are drastic changes but it depends mostly
on your working/learning habit I guess. I would suggest
you use the minix2 book with minix2 and later switch
to minix3. The major problem is to find out, what
info in the book is still correct and what is not.
Some information about the changes you can get out
of the Thesis from Jorrit Herder, but it is still
not "easy".

greets
Bernhard

Just checked Amazon and it says it still hasn't been released. $103! Isn't
free software a beautiful thing...time to break open the piggy bank since my
"free copy for software porters" got shot down. : )

As an owner of the previous edition, I'm looking forward to the new
book. However, I'd like to buy it as an electronic version if possible.
The Prentice Hall site indicates that it would be available as a
SafariX etextbook:

http://vig.prenhall.com/catalog/academic/product/0,1144,0131859919,00.html

Any idea yet when this online edition will become available for
purchase, and what the pricing might be?

bookpool shows it in-stock and at a discount. They also show a list
price lower than Amazon. That seems a bit odd.

Amazon shows a release date of 31st of January. I haven't ordered it
yet, although I really really want it. Does anyone already have a copy
from Amazon, or should I switch to a different shop?
I might consider ordering it at a non-online bookshop, but I don't know
how long that's gonna take...

You can get the new book at nerdbooks, in stock and shipping now, for
$81.37 USD.

http://www.nerdbooks.com/item.php?id=0131429388

That is $21.68 USD less than the price currently listed at Amazon.

Thanks.

Andy, thanks for gracing this newsgroup with your presence. Also i know
i speak for a lot of people when i say thanks for the third edition of
the book as well. Its not your fault that there has been a slight delay
- these things happen , but we all look forward to ordering & reading
the 3rd Edition when it becomes available worldwide.

Thanks.

I ordered from BookPool on 13 January and received it today, 23 January.
Price was US$80.50, no tax and no shipping in the USA. A good deal, I say!
