Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel.
However, work is in progress to provide Debian for other kernels,
primarily for the Hurd, but also Free BSD, netBSD. The Hurd is a
collection of servers that run on top of a microkernel (such as Mach)
to implement different features. The Hurd is free software produced by
the GNU project.

I think Debian is the best OS, because of its packaging system(.debs
and apt-get) ans the number of packages(over 17.000) available from the
same place(ftp.debian.org).

Is there any plan to suport a debian Gnu with minix powering it?

Jaldhar Vyas announced such a project, dubbed 'Preventa' [1]. That's
the only action I've seen in this direction so far.

Sounds fine to me. If anyone seriously wants to work on it, we should
have a discussion in the newsgroup about what the minimal kernel and OS
additions would be needed to support it. Virtual memory is #1 on our
list. That will get rid of chmem. Threads are also on the list after
that.

I have been offline for a while, hence the delay here.

Here is the thread debian devel
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.debian.devel/browse_frm/thread/8dc401dbad9227b7/b7ceb9e947a04e5f#b7ceb9e947a04e5f
where Jaldhar H. Vyas said he was working on the port

Maybe a new group shoud be made as minix.debian.devel or
comp.os.debian.minix ...
