Setting font size
Hi, I usually have: exec /usr/bin/X -dpi 100 -depth 24 -f 75 dpms in my /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc but I can see that if deleting the option "-dpi 100" the default resolution is $ xdpyinfo | grep resolution resolution: 114x114 dots per inch on my notebook (a Toshiba U400 13,3") and it is 90x90 dots per inch on my... more »

Optical 3-Button (no wheel) USB Mouse
I have been searching for optical and/or USB mice with 3 true buttons (instead of two buttons and a wheel) for a long time. I don't like the button-as-scroll-wheel design, because: - X applications tend to use button 2, and sometimes for actions (like inserting at the cursor position in Emacs) where accidential scrolling... more »

cut-n-paste woes
...Check out xsel. Unfortunately I can't remember the download URL. The author's email is conrad at vergenet dot net. It's most useful to do the things you wish and only comprises a small command-line utility. It should be included as an X utility and come with X11 distros, IMO.

Hardware for a 2560x1600 X-Terminal (experience report)
Given that 30" 2560x1600 monitors have become affordable (some time ago actually), we want to switch from our current generation of Igel-based X-Terminals with 1920x1200 monitors <[link]> to new hardware that supports 2560x1600. Our requirements are: * fanless... more »

Get Xorg Release Version
How does one get the xorg release version? I can get the server version with: Xorg -version Which returns 1.3.0, but this doesn't tell me what Xorg release I am using, e.g. 7.1, 7.2 etc.

cut-n-paste woes
I come from the old school of Unix / X11 usage. Select with left click to copy. Extend selection with right click to copy more. Paste with middle click. Using keyboard or menu items to explicitly copy something is a foreign import. Increasingly I find that I am on systems that have two incompatible cut and paste buffers. I run into it most often (but not exclusively)... more »

xf86-video-ati and crossfire
Hello I have two x1950xtx cards with a crossfire cable in between. This works fine in Windows XP and I do not count on xf86-video-ati supporting crossfire. However, is it possible to start xorg without needing to disconnect the monitor cable from the crossfire cable and insert it in to a free DVI port on the card? Because this is what I... more »
