xfm 1.3 setup problems

I'm having trouble my xfm setup. When I double click on a file icon, say a
postscript file, ghostview is invoked but the file is not displayed. When I
double click on a GIF file, xv starts up, but the image is not displayed.

It seems that in my xfmrc file, the argument is not being passed to the
program being invoked.
My xfmrc file has lines like:
*.gif:xfm_gif.xpm:exec xv $1::
*.ps:xfm_ps.xpm:exec ghostview $1:
Why aren't xv and ghostview being passed arguments? I'm apparently
misunderstanding how xfmrc is supposed to be setup.
I'm running Linux 1.2.6, XFree86 3.1, xfm 1.3
I'll appreciate any help
