Hi,

Using a netbook with an Intel Atom 1.6 single core dual thread processor.

When playing music or black and white movies the machine runs in the mid
60's celsius, no problem. When playing color movies the machine runs in the
mid 70's celsius which is at the upper range of it's heat range.

It does not miss any frames, the graphic quality is very good playing color
movies. glxgears shows it is producing 60 fps so overall it is doing the
graphics OK.

The question is, is there any graphics adjustment available lowering graphics
quality slightly to reduce the heat factor when playing color movies ? Most
movies are two hour movies, etc..

Secondly, is there a laptop computer with processor/graphics capability which
does these color movies at a normal, less than max, heat range ? I don't
want to max out the processor all the time playing these, and would consider
different computer to do so. But, like I said, music and black and white
movies are playing just fine with everything running in the normal range. It's
like it was made for those but not the color movies.

THX.

70C sounds within range. A lot of Atoms break down (and even then, it's not a
guaranteed breakdown, more of a documented safety point) at 90C.

Do you have the specs for the particular Atom you are using?

If there's a cooling issue with the design of the netbook.. well.. it's a
cooling issue. You might be able to force a speed reduction (speed stepping) at
lower temperature threshold.. but obviously the cost will be reduced performance.

Most CPUs take a lot more heat than most people can actually tolerate... (in
other words, some are designed to run pretty darn hot even if it looks scary to us).

Indeed. Silicon junctions go AWOL at 180C-200C

I have melted the solder off a diode - connected accidentally across a
battery- which survived!

In general the ageing process is excponetial with temperature. Lifetimes
at 90C plus are reduced from thousands of years to just tens typically.

And chip specs start to drift..

But the main reason to keep temps dowon is to stop the chip from going
out of spec - typically propagation delays change and at a given point
the chip stops working.

It may start working again if left to cool. Or not. In my experience
half a dozen SPARC computers had fans go after a few years. Replacing
the fans got all but one working: That needed a new CPU.

Displaying the video is not the hard part. Decoding it is. Either your machine
can handle the task or not. There's really no middle ground here. You can't really
"half decode" it.

An Atom by itself is a pretty weak CPU for video decoding.

Well what I did find out was the temp I was reading was from the CPU
socket base, not the CPU core. So an additional sensor gives me the
core temp which looks to be at a reasonable level.
