Subject: LinuxPPC and German Keyboard with G3
Hi,
I've just started to use LinuxPPC 2000 on my Apple PowerBook G3
(Lombard) and I'm already in trouble. I've a german keyborad and I
assume, the mac-de-latin1-nodeadkeys.kmap.gz should hit the spot. After
fixing a small bug in the keymaps line of that file, it was accepted by
loadkeys without any message. Also the dumpkeys shows the correct
values. But the keymapping used by the keyboard driver did not change.

Pleas can anybody help me? It's no fun to keep the mapping for nearly
half the keys in mind.

ciao mike

Hey Mike,

The supplied german mappings did not work at all for me (neither on the
concole nor under X).
So I wrote my own mappings that correctly map the usual german keyboard
layout (especially all those combinations with alt like '[' on alt-5,
'\' on alt-shift-7 etc.).

There are two files:

- de.map        which is the concole mapping
- Xmodmap       which is the mapping for X

You can try them by typing

loadkeys <path where you put it>/de.map    in the concole
xmodmap <path where you put it>/Xmodmap    in an xterminal

If these work for you you can install them in the system.
BUT BE CAREFULL!!!!
Those settings work for my Blue G3 with an ADB keyboard (thats why I
think the might work for you) but they didn't work when I used my USB
keyboard. So try the above commands and make sure the tables work before
installing them.

To install the concole table permanently:

cp de.map /usr/lib/kbd/keytables/mac/
edit /etc/sysconfig/keyboard to contain "de.map"

To install the X table permanently:

cp Xmodmap /etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap
/etc/bashrc loads it from there so be sure to source /etc/bashrc in your .bashrc

Thats it. I really hope those work for you.
As a side effect I can use alt-click to simulate the middle mouse button
and altgr-click to simulate the right mouse button, but I am not sure
whether this would work with your machine.

Cheers,

Daniel

Ah, why did you do it again? :)

But thanks for the nice instructions, we should place it on a server
somewhere.

It depends on which X server you use. Xpmac has support for
emulating the mouse buttons. It can be tricky depending on your
function key.

If I remember correctly there was also a bug in the LinuxPPC2000
distribution which tried to load a keytable a second time and failed
during startup. As far as I know you can ignore this.

All distributors: Are you listening? we want German keyboard layouts
for our lombarde s included. ;-)=
