Before I get to configuring it the actual system (RH6.1)for the LAN
access... I'm a bit put off doing anything in software before I feel
that the PCMCIA card is talking to the actual HUB in hardware, what I
mean is:

on my TP (760ed) the 3C589D-TP does seem to initialize: you get a beep
for it after the PCMCIA boots up at boot-up process (same as it used to
happen when NT was on the machine) ..

BUT!, the hub which always has the light come up next to the port that
has a cable from the port to a switched on machine, DOESN'T LIGHT UP!<?>

The Light on the actual card adapter for the cable has a light, which is
ON after initialisation!

I tried several cables, different ports on the hub etc. but nothing...
I made double sure that the contacts between the cable and adapter are
touching...

This was never an issue before with other OS'es. I might be fussing over
nothing

Should be two beeps.

Check your system log to see what the 3c589_cs driver has to say.
Look for anything unusual. I would suspect a transceiver detection
problem. See the PCMCIA-HOWTO for some discussion of this.

On the off chance that the card itself is actually working, have you
configured the card's ethernet interface to work via ifconfig?

just what i was going to ask. the light on the hub won't light up for the
port if the card isn't initialized with an ip address. the lights on my
dongle for my netgear fa410tx card lites up and the hub light doesn't until
i reconfigure it with the proper ip.
