The SSH specifications use vt100 as an example of a shell that can be
used. PuTTY uses xterm. My question is... what's the difference
between the two?

I figure maybe this newsgroup is a better place to post this question
than comp.security.ssh because the SSH specs, ultimately, say very
little on the subject. This leads me to conclude that the question of
which terminal to use is really not an SSH question but rather...
maybe a Linux question?

Xterm is a program that emulates a VT100 terminal. A shell is a command
interpreter which often uses a terminal for input/output.

An xterm terminal is colour terminal, the vt100 is monochrome.

Depends on the xterm program. The *original* XAW xterm program (the
one *I* use) is 'monochrome', in the sense that there is only two main
colors user (text (forwground) and background), plus the color for the
cursor box/block, although you can set the 'colors' used to whatever
you want. So the *original* XAW xterm program is almost exactly like a
VT102 (and can also emulate a Tektronix 4014 (vector graphics
terminal)). Most modern xterminal program (eg gnome-terminal) are more
like a colored ANSI terminal.
