Can anybody tell me how I can write a simple script that can send a mail via
my provider?
I tried the follwoing commandline:
sendmail -f'spar...@gmx.at' -au<loginname> -au<password> 'spar...@gmx.at'
Test
CTRL-D
It seems that the problem is in the ssmtp.config file. There is a line that
says rewriteDomain. When I leave it empty I get the erorr message about the
domain and when I write some domain in there I get the error message about the
user.

I use ssmtp, but no authorization is necessary with my ISP, and
it does say in the manpage that it has only been tested with
MSexchange.
Scripting for SMTP isn't really that difficult. This will send
a mail to a smart smtp-host for delivery:
#!/bin/bash
(echo HELO localhost
echo MAIL FROM: bal...@dash.com
echo RCPT TO: who...@whatever.nt
echo DATA
echo Subject: foo
echo
echo HI THERE SWEETHEART BIGTART
echo
echo .
sleep 3
echo "QUIT" )| netcat smtp.balderdash.com 25
exit 0
You just need to add the auth steps in there.

Thanks. I wrote now a python script which workes almost out of the box.
Not surprised at all, Gerhard. I know a pro when I see one.

Sadly, you don't.
Beavis, which “pro” told you to use rsh for remote logins over the Internet?
Why are you using your own Python script instead of Python's standard
smtplib module?

Has he ever figured out how to get his newsreader to
output plain text like every else around here?
I doubt it. He's too busy wasting his time posting to people
who don't read his posts and don't care what he thinks.
Which is why he ends up talking to his own sock puppets most of
the time.
I guess he must get off on reading these bulletins his posts
occassionally inspire me to compose.
Sad.

Please fix that broken delimiter. What you are doing is forcing
people to see you sig, which is rude and a violation of the
netiquette.
It should be "-- " which you know perfectly well.

Leave it to an academic to think that he's above the law.
Or are you a janitor?

What an ignorant statement that is.
You *must* be a janitor.
Show me one scientist in the employ of a corporation, directly or
indirectly, that has ever discovered anything that would make
his/her employer unhappy.
You can't.
And that covers 99.999% of the scientists.

Whatever you say, Beavis. Tell us again how you use ed to read your mail.
And be sure to share with us the latest gossip you've picked up from Bigfoot

don't read yours, either. Plonk.

(Yes, that is one of my email addresses.)
Oh look! It's a troll convention. "Kevin Rodgers" AKA "Mike"
ad infinitum.
I don't read its posts. They are sent to /dev/null and not
stored in the local cache. This goes for any responses to
them according to the References header.
What I get in my newsreader is a mock post with fake headers
and no body, except for the first parts of the Subject and
From headers.
If you don't like what I have to say, "Kevin", why don't
you do something about it?
Or, you could eat shit, which is, of course, your only
real option.
Lot's of catsup, "Kevin". It goes down better that way.
AC
So what?
Why should I care if someone I've never heard reads my posts or
not?
Tell us: Just how long have you been an idiot?
AC
Can you explain to me (in private correspondence, if you prefer) why you
think I am this "Mike" person? I would gladly discuss your
misconceptions via email, if you were not so paranoid as to hide your
address in your newsgroup postings.

I am impressed. Would you like to share with us the configuration
and/or code that implements that?
BTW, since you haven't discarded my From: header, why don't you email me
directly? (It wouldn't have anything to do with the need to gratify
your ego in a public forum, would it?) You could even send me some mail
bombs, although yahoo.com and earthlink.net might not look too kindly on
that.

I generally don't like what you have to say, which is why I respond in
the newsgroups to which you post your drivel and forward your most
obnoxious messages to <ab...@earthlink.net>.

Until I hunt you down like a rodent. :-)

It's spelled "ketchup" where I come from.
Check this out:

Even within the realms of the often weird Comedy Lab strand, The
Pooters was a distinctly peculiar piece. Writer/performers Alan
Connor and Charles Skelton cast themselves as brothers who run a
deadly serious reading circle that doesn't so much border on the
bizarre as revel in it. The Pooters grandly interpret a wide
variety of undeserving literature, often imbuing their analyses
with dark, homosexual undertones. Whatever they say is fully
accepted by the circle. Astronomy expert Sir Patrick Moore
appeared as himself in a surprising but undemanding cameo.
Cast
Alan Connor - Alan Pooter
Charles Skelton - Charles Pooter
Sir Patrick Moore - Sir Patrick Moore
Crew
Alan Connor - Writer
Charles Skelton - Writer
Robert Katz - Director / Producer
Peter Fincham - Executive Producer
As you no doubt are aware, "pooter" is a mildly derogatory term for a
homosexual (not that there's anything wrong with that :-). Interesting
choice for your pseudonym.

"Mike" is more likely related to "Sam":

Beavis's email address is alanc...@earthlink.net. But it is just as well
that you didn't know it. Contrary to his assertions, Beavis does not use
C/R after abuse@earthlink's bitch-slapped him upside his head, he just
autodeletes all incoming mail, so anything you would've written him would
end up to be a wasted effort.

Yes, he's using slrn to read Usenet. It should be quite obvious that slrn
doesn't work this way; even if Beavis had enough intelligence to figure out
how to set up slrn's killfile.
Where "years" is in the same idiosyncratic system of measurements as the
"days" in "killfiled for 90 days" is.

Nice job on my page. I'm flattered.

It seems that nesting the 'try' clauses doesn't scale well. What if
fifty files are opened? Must the nesting level of the 'try' clauses be
fifty also, to close them promptly?

Meanwhile, we're out here clicking on interesting looking subject

annoying, possibly even more than AC is. We can easily avoid his
