I have a problem: when I try to play a video using any program (vlc,
movie player, gxine, MPlayer), the video doesn't show, audio is
ok. Any kind of video files show this problem. If I play a video with
any player, pause it, and play tha same or another video using another
player, this latter player works fine.
I have updated all players/codecs.
Do you have any suggestion in order to avoid this annoying workaround?
I updated even the latest ATI radeon drivers for my mobile 9600 vcard
(ver. 8.32.5 from ATI page)
Thanks,
Filippo

This sounds to me like a problem with the overlay. You can try to use
mplayer with '-vo x11', so mplayer doesn't use an overlay (which is slow
but failsafe). If this succeeds, go through your video driver's options
or try installing the free radeon driver instead of ATIs fglrx.

This was my postinst commnands for ati drivers (as ubuntuguide)
sudo aticonfig --force --initial
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
everything is fine but I have the problem already discussed. I tried
to change to this (as aticonfig suggests)
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=opengl
but this doesn't work. I cannot even login into gnome.
My card is ati mobile 9600 pro. I'd like to have the overlay up and
running, any suggestion?
Thanks for your help,
Filippo
p.s.
this is the result to fglrxinfo -o command
phil@earth:~$ fglrxinfo -o
Error: couldn't find an overlay visual!

See above, just give the free radeon driver a try. I often found it
worked more reliably.
- Uninstall fglrx completely
- dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, select "radeon" driver
- for possible driver options, see "man radeon"
Greetings, Felix
PS: This driver has less OpenGL abilities and sometimes problems with
TV-out, but most of the time, this won't bother you.

(snip)
thanks for the advice. As far as I know (tried a couple of time), the
free radeon driver is not 3D capable, this is the reason I prefer
official ati driver.
Then I have to choose, 3D or overlay; I guess 3D is the better
choice. Isn't it?
Thanks,
Filippo
That depends on the version of X you have and the exact model of Radeon
you have.
There has been (3D) support for the Radeons up to the 9250 for quite a
while in the open source drivers.
Recent versions of X.org (6.9.0 and up) have some experimental (3D)
support for newer Radeons (including the rest of the 9xxx series and
beyond).
What have your tried (and when) to get 3D working with the open source
drivers?
> Then I have to choose, 3D or overlay; I guess 3D is the better

That depends on what you want to do! If you do a lot of 3D gaming or
otherwise need 3D support then the choice is obvious. If you're just
doing ordinary desktop stuff but watch a lot of movies, then choosing XV
overlay support might be better for you.
BTW, as far as I'm aware, XV is supported by the ATI drivers, too.
What does 'xdpyinfo' say?
Some OpenGL extensions are missing compared to fglrx, but this isn't
important with most of the 3d software available.
> BTW, as far as I'm aware, XV is supported by the ATI drivers, too.
They should, at least. But in my experience, there are a lot of strange
problems with fglrx drivers ...

one for all: googleearth is a mess with opensource driver

Good. You and I are using the same version of X.org. That rules out
that as the source of your problem.

At this point, I notice you're lacking the "DOUBLE-BUFFER" extension. I
honestly don't know if it's related to your problem or not, but there's
a chance that it might help. Do you have
Load "dbe"
somewhere in your xorg.conf file, or is it commented out? You could try
enabling that to see if it helps.
And that last one says XV overlays should be supported by your system,
and it has always worked for me. The DBE extension is the only
difference I can see between your configuration and mine.

thanks John, actually that row was missing. I have added in the
"module" section, DOUBLE BUFFER appears now but the problem persists :-(

the Xv is supported but seems not working. I have made this
experiment:
a) play a video with mplayer, no others video playing in the meantime
(overlay available)
this is the verbose output along with black video (not working)

So it seems that the driver supports Xv but it doesn't work. The same
was for the previous legacy ATI driver version (8.28something, now
8.35something)
Thanks and best regards,
Filippo
One last idea for you: what's your "Device" section in xorg.conf look
like. Mine (which works fine for Xv) is:
# === ATI device section ===
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter"
Driver "fglrx"
# === disable PnP Monitor ===
#Option "NoDDC"
# === disable/enable XAA/DRI ===
Option "no_accel" "no"
Option "no_dri" "no"
# === FireGL DDX driver module specific settings ===
# === Screen Management ===
Option "DesktopSetup" "Single"
Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, AUTO"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "off"
Option "HSync2" "unspecified"
Option "VRefresh2" "unspecified"
Option "ScreenOverlap" "0"
Option "GammaCorrectionI" "0x06419064"
Option "GammaCorrectionII" "0x00000000"
# === OpenGL specific profiles/settings ===
Option "Capabilities" "0x00000000"
# === Video Overlay for the Xv extension ===
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
# === OpenGL Overlay ===
# Note: When OpenGL Overlay is enabled, Video Overlay
# will be disabled automatically
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
# === Misc Options ===
Option "UseFastTLS" "2"
Option "BlockSignalsOnLock" "on"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0" # vendor=1002, device=4e47
Screen 0
EndSection
resolved!
Overlay started to work after removing modules:
radeon
drm
even if I was using ati legacy driver, that modules prevented XVideo
to work.
Thanks guys for your help,
Filippo
