I've searched just about all the comp.os.linux.* newsgroups and
couldn't find this answer.... and I couldn't find it online either... so
hopefully someone can help me.
I'm trying to get the Real player plugin to work with/in Netscape 4.06
or 4.07 (I've got both installed now, but it didn't work when just 4.06
was installed either)
What I'm running:
Redhat 5.1 + updates
Xfree86/fvm95
Netscape 4.06 and 4.07
same problem as root as user
RealPlayer 5 (5.03 I'm pretty sure) installed as rpm. executable is
in /usr/bin, Extra files are in /usr/lib/Real
How I tried installing the real video plugin:
4.06 (installed via rpm from redhat)
/usr/lib/netscape/plugins/ is plugin dir
./RAObserver.class \___both copied there from
/usr/lib/Real/"files"
./RAPlayer.class /
./librvplayer.so ---linked to
/usr/lib/Real/librvplayer.so (linked with "ln -s <file> <file>)
Started netscape, Edit/preferances/navigator/applications... edited
RealVideo 5.0:
Description: RealPlayer 5.0
Type: audio/x~pn-realaudio-plugin
Suffix: rpm (and I've tried adding .ra, .ram,
.rm in different ammounts with no avail)
plugin box checked with the librvplayer.so
plugin selected.
Restarted netscape, can't view any real media. In Netscape 4.07 under
the same setup (different plugin directory though), it doesn't see the
plugin at all. I can't check the box, and I can't force it.
http://service.real.com/solutions/RAP00911.HTM is a page from
www.real.com that tries to explain installation of the plugin....
following it's directions, I'm supposed to change the mime type
somewhat....
...in netscape preferences... same as above...
Description: RealPlayer 5.0
Type: audio/x~pn-realaudio --(the
instruct to get rid of the -plugin extenstion to this)
Suffix: rpm
.....they say to check the plugin box... but it
greys out whenever you deleate the -plugin from the mime type, so I
can't. I've also tried out of desparation just to point the filetype to
the rvplayer executable in /usr/bin, but all that does is open the real
player when I come to a real audio file, but doesn't play the file.
Anyone with any hints or tips or better instructions or experiance or
anything???????
Please?????
Thanks in advance..... very much so,
Josh I.

My setup within netscape for the plugin is:
Description: <blank>
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin
Suffixes: <blank>
Plugin Checked: Selection - RealVideo Player plugin
My setup for the external call is:
Description: RealAudio
MIME Type: audio/x-pn-realaudio
Suffixes: ra,ram,rm
Application: /usr/bin/rvplayer %s
Also, my dist of rvplayer came with documentation. Check the
rvplayer5.0/doc directory.

Good luck. My friend gave up trying to get his to run. As reference,
I did not install netscape or rvplayer5.0 from rpm's.

One of the problems I ran into getting my plugin to work was that netscape
was not finding one of the required libc files even though its directory
was listed in ld.so.conf. I wound up making a link from the /lib directory
to that file which finally made the plugin show up, but it still did not
work reliably.
I have now upgraded to the Netscape 4.5 beta. I'm running RedHat 5.1 with
the 2.0.35 kernel and the latest Real Player client (NOT the one that is
packaged as an RPM, but the generic linux one). This setup works better,
but the plugin is still not one hundred percent reliable.
Hope this helps.
It worked great. the tild (~) thing you mentioned wasn't the problem, but a
typo in my message. The problem was that in my setup for external call,
I left out the %s at the end of the app line.
I did have one problem.... I got it to work in 4.06, but 4.07 still won't
see the plugin as even being there. No biggy... I can manage with 4.06 for
quite a while, and I could probably get 4.07 to work if I tried some more.
Thank you again.

I have the same setup. netscape 4.06 rpm and rvplayer 5.02 rpm for RedHat
5.1/i386. However, when I click on a link, it seems its working, although I
couldn't hear anything. RealPlayer runs fine as stand-alone.
Is there something special about calling a program from netscape helper?
losing some ENV settings?
Thanks.

I had similar problems with Real Audio v5.0 and netscape. What I think
I did to get it to work was setup the .ra, .ram, .rm filetypes as save
to disk. I would then launch real audio outside of netscape, and select
the file using real audio's open file. It works fine. Not quite as
automatic as it should be. I've also got a plugin mimetype set up for
the embedded realaudio stuff like at spinner.com -- now if only netscape
wouldn't choke on the site. That mimetype automatically plays the
content. Let me mention that when I had .ra,.ram and .rm set up to
automatically launch with real audio it didn't work, but once I changed
it to save to disk it works fine.

Add ' %s' to the command line for the executable.
