probably a completely incorrect thing to be posting to comp.os.linux.help, but
I've been posessed by a certain feeling, folks...
The feeling of... pure and simple... gratitude. I wish I could thank every
single person who helped with the developement of Linux or coded a bit for it
or even answered a question for a floundering newbie like myself. The Linux
operating system is, in my opinion, absolutely bar none for ekeing out the
maximum power from a PC. As an only reasonably computer literate person, look
at everything I was able to achieve with a heretofore brain-damaged MS-DOS
based 486 --
1) Contiguous memory (XMS! EMS! Aaaaarrrghhh!!!)
2) Complete Internet access (mail, ftp, telnet, the works)
3) Oodles of nice compilers and other goodies.
4) Multitasking (not multithreading, boyo!)
5) A super-spiffy windowing system (yea rah XFree86!)
6) The respect and admiration of everyone around me for looking like the
veritable God of Groovy by actually *building* a Unix site.
7) Tons of experience in system administration and the various nooks and
crannies of a Unix system.
8) Free! Free! Free!
9) Aaaaand.... I had one hell of a lot of fun installing the Slackware
distribution and fiddling around with it.
Can you beat it? I think not!
So once again, an indescribably immense thank you to the countless men and
women who toiled to bring Linux to the light, keep it there, and *still* are
kind enough to help us out.
Sorry for getting all gooshy -- I now return you to your regularly scheduled
broadcast.
