UPS with earth leakage device.
In my building someone get earth-leakage faults in the middle of the night. A consultant said that it's caused by UPS/s. But I can't understand since the UPS is designed to switch on AFTER the mains failure. So how can it cause the mains failure. == TIA.

White balance on built-in webcam
For some reason, after recent update I suspect, the automatic white balance is no longer works on my laptop's webcam: seems to be fixed on a daylight settings, so I get yellowish cast when light source is tungsten/halogen bulbs. Also, judging by the [very light] flickering, it's defaulted to the US frequency of 60Hz, as opposed to 50Hz here in... more »

SciFi-like virus stories ?
Although, learnt at the 8-bit device level, I KNOW computers down to the transistor level. So I get very annoyed and insulted by these art-students and journalist's stories. ...OK, while writing this, I've realised that eg. the facility :"boot from a USB, or any other device" is where the virus could be introduced.... more »

Replacing Cell Phone with Laptop with Internet Connectivity
The cost of ownership of my cell phone has become pretty high, at least for my budget. I'd like to explore any viable alternate to owning a cell phone, perhaps using a combination of laptop running Linux with Internet connectivity. Can anyone share any pointers or experiences? Thanks, Ramu

Mini ITX motherboards - Intel Atom
I'm looking to run Linux on a Mini ITX motherboard as the basis for an intelligent irrigation system. On a price (I'm not rich) / performance aspect (and hopefully a reliable brand), the Intel D945CGLF ($NZ134) or D945CGLF2 ($NZ157) or Foxconn 45CS look like starters. The Intel one's have an IDE connector which ought to be handy with the contents of my junk box... more »

problems mounting external USB HD
Hi all, I have an external USB harddrive which I share between my Linux Slackware 12.2 and Windows XP machines. The USB partitions are all FAT32. All worked well during the first year of use but for the past few months the USB HD gets frequently mounted in USB 1 mode instead of USB 2. I have no idea why this happens. I googled for it and it turns out... more »
