I'll be purchasing a 17" monitor soon and would appreciate any
recommendations or warnings about monitors. I need (want) one that
can do 1280x1024 at greater than 75 hz. (My monitor at work only does
60 hz at that resolution and I get a splitting headache after about
30 minutes of use).

From what I've seen so far, the ctx1785gm is one of the cheapest monitors
that will meet this requirement. ($700). But I've heard negative
reports about ctx monitors and problems with ctx in getting repairs
and/or replacements. I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest
monitor, but money is always a consideration.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter Mattis

I have found (and we have about 4 different 17" monitors here) that specs
are less than half the story. Are you limited to $700 or could you go a little
higher? IMHO the Sony, Nanoa and Nokia (447X) around $950-$1050 are all killer
monitors. I have yet to see a truly good (which to me, like you. means comfortable
1280x1204 for 10 hours a day) 17" monitor for $700. The Mag DX17F is the closet
I've personally seen to excellent for <=$700.

Look into Sony and Idek. For a 17" monitory, Sony has the
largest actual viewing area that I've seen around. I think
the model that I was looking at was the 17SF. The Idek 17"
is an awesome monitor too. They both can handle the res.
that you want at the refresh you want too. They are almost
equal in price too.

I can recommend the 'MicroScan 5EP' by ADI. ADI has been making
tubes for other name-brand vendors for years and recently
they decided to give themselves some good PR and sell their
own stuff under a house-brand 'MicroScan'.

I've got an ATI Mach64 PCI card w 2Megs VRAM and a rock-solid
1280x1024(8-bits)-mode with a 135 MHz dot-clock.

Hope this helps,

Hi,
I am the owner of a ctx1785gm and I am pleased with it.
But I can only use it at 1024x768 due to my grafikcard.

Best monitor I've seen, bar none, is the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 17TX.
It is NOT cheap.

I don't know about the Sony 17SF, but the 17SF1 sold in the UK will
only handle 1280x1024 at 60Hz and 1024x768 at 75Hz. If you want a
Sony with 1280x1024 @ 75Hz capability you may have to go for their
"professional" range (GDMxxx) which is *very* nice.

Dale.

Depending on how much you want to spend. I am very happy with my MAG
DX17F (can be found on the street for $600). It can do 1024x768 at 80Hz
(I think).

The latest PC Magazine has a review of 17 inch monitors. I just got
my copy in the mail yesterday. Andy

I dunno, I find the DX17F in my home system is fuzzy compared to my ViewSonic
17G in my work system. I've been wishing I hadn't had to switch to lower
priced monitor when buying the home system to save $100. I had heard good
things about the DX17F before I bought it.....
