I'm running Debian etch with ALSA on a desktop with an Audigy sound
card. Although the sound system works, I can't get skype to access my
sound card.

I rebooted and reconfigured ALSA and ran $ aplay test.wav It produced
the test sound.

An obvious question: It is my understanding that my webcam (Logitech
Quickcam Pro for notebooks) has a mike build in. Is that so?

Another obvious question: I'm not using the Logitech Quickcam Pro for
Notebook with a notebook but with a desktop. Does that make any
difference?

I'm running skype 2.1.0.47. I installed the uvc driver:

$ dmesg | grep uvcvideo
[ 19.673176] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device <unnamed> (046d:0991)
[ 19.686509] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo

$ dmesg

In the terminal in which I start skype, I get:

$ skype
ALSA lib pcm.c:2144:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM null
ALSA lib pcm.c:2144:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM null

$ lsmod | grep uvc
uvcvideo 46600 0
compat_ioctl32 2080 1 uvcvideo
videodev 28288 1 uvcvideo
v4l1_compat 13028 2 uvcvideo,videodev
usbcore 119216 7
uvcvideo,usblp,usb_storage,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd

Apparently skype runs in background even if user window is
closed. I get nothing returned from the fuser command:

$ fuser -v /dev/snd/*
