On my Fedora 8 x86_84 system, /media/cdrom has disappeared. I suspect this is the result of a yum update, but I need help diagnosing the problem. 1. Hello. I have a small Packard-Bell laptop. I installed the latest slackware (12.1) on it; with the stock kernel and its module I could set the LCD contrast (bright or dim). I have recompiled the kernel, and now I can do it anymore. Anybody know which module I must include to have that feature? Thanks.... more »

I need/want to use the BadRAM kernel patch. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any HOWTO for it. The author mentions a modification for memtest86+ that would tell the necessary command line (Patching the kernel and installing the tools wouldn't be an issue) but apparently forgot to link to it. I added an empty SATA drive to my machine which runs a SCSI drive. When I go to partition it with cfdisk, the first think is I'm asked to select "New disk label type" and have the options amiga, bsd, gpt, msdos, etc. I googled to find out which I should use, but no clear answer. I suspect it is gpt, and I suspect it is the default.... more »
