How can I thoroughly debug these types of errors?
  Hi I have had a few times these types of error reports before and I can not narrow them to anything apparent I have plenty of RAM in my box, have run memtest and checked my hard drives with e2fsck, smartmontools, etc, yet these types of errors keep happening. I think now I have the time to thoroughly investigate... more »

using 32-bit library on 64-bit system
  Hi. We have a mixed bunch of 32-bit (i686) and 64-bit (x86_64) Fedora 11 machines. I created a library on one of the 32-bit machines by issuing the commands g++ -c List.cc ar q libList.a List.o ranlib libList.a Suppose that I attempt to use same on a 64-bit machine: g++ -o foo foo.o -L. -lList... more »

ia32 System call emulation in x86_64
  I would really appreciate it if anyone can shed light into how are system calls for 32 bit binaries handled in a 64 bit kernel (or atleast give me pointers other than the source code itself). More precisely I would like to know how and where the kernel decides to use the 32 bit syscall table rather than 64 bit syscall table.... more »

HPET bug?
  Hi everyone, We are seeing jiffies go forward occasionally, by 300 seconds, this it appears is due to the following code in the 2.6.16 kernel: mark_offset_tsc_hpet(void): ... 1 hpet_current = hpet_readl(HPET_COUNTER); 2 rdtsc(last_tsc_low, last_tsc_high); 3 4 /* lost tick compensation */ 5 offset = hpet_readl(HPET_T0_CMP) - hpet_tick;... more »

How to implement a http(apache)-access-only system
  I encountered such an requirement of implementing a system that: 1. system accounts including root can't directly access file or data on this system; 2. only specific application, ie. http server (apache) can access file on this system; (so apache linux user ie. www-data should be allowed on it) 3. apache passes web user accounts (not linux system account ie. root)... more »

W^X in Linux?
  NOTE: originally posted to 'linux.kernel' NG [link] I was wondering if W^X is part of the Linux roadmap for the (near) future? From what I remember from college and MMU's the security issues we're having today shouldn't really exist, but they do.

Communicating with kernel module.
  Hi, I have a kernel module that does not control any device and instead provides a specific service to user space. The communication from the user space is done by opening the character device file that this module publishes and passing some specific ioctl request together with a parameter which is usually a large user-allocated buffer. Some... more »

soft limits of open files from xinetd
  Hi, I found the soft ulimit of open files set by xinetd is always 1024. I tried to modify /etc/security/limit.conf, but it only changed the hard limit exported by xinetd. Is there a way to raise the soft limit of open files of xinetd so that the services started by xinetd can open more than 1024 files?... more »
