I leave my computer mostly running Linux, but occasionally in XP if I have
to vpn in to work.
One thing I notice, after I turn out the lights and go to bed is that the
green LEDs on my PC tower go apeshit when its booted into XP. The whole
thing thrashes so much it puts on a light show of green led light on my
wall.
In fact, just now, I got up and booted into linux because it was annoying me
so much! Linux, on the other hand, is extremely placid and stable.

Now that I've got my Debian Sergeant up and running, I couldn't agree any
more. Browsing the internet has become more pleasureable, because web
pages load so much quicker.
It also boots up a lot quicker than XP. I don't need to upgrade my Celeron
1.7 GHz, 266 MHz DDR system. It runs spritely in Linux.

My Linux server and client sit there nice and quiet over night, occasional
bits of activity when the over night stuff runs. Now and then it makes a
purring sound and the dog nips out to check its alright.
But the thing that keeps me awake is my little PDA, they must put 20,000
lumin LEDs on these things, red flash green flash red flash green flash all
night long and I know I have about 2 minutes before the alarm goes off to
wake me up, because I get amber green amber green lighting up the whole
bedroom. Then the front panel lights up white, approximately 40000 lumins,
then the alarm goes off. But its too late by then, I'm already awake
because no one could sleep in all that light.

Probably doing it's auto disk layout task. Sort of like a mini defrag to
arrange things on the disk so that bootup is faster. Happens automatically
every three days.

Linux definitely makes it easier to know if there is unwarranted network
activity.

Kreegah! Bundolo Microsoft bolgani!
So why do we still need DiskKeeper?
I'm not sure which "green light" you're referring to (disk
drive? Modem indicator light?) but my green light (external
DSL modem unit) will flash erratically on occasion because
of all of the malware flitting about.
They're out there. You might want to check your XP side for infection,
unless you're behind a reasonably good external firewall.

Windows Vista. Because everyone wants a really slick-looking 8-sided wheel.

How is that possible?
Micoshaft eXpee installer is viral - it destroys other mainstream
operating systems like SuSE installed in the computer
much like a bona fide viral infection of a computer
in an illegal bid to retain market share.
If you installed SuSE and then tried to install eXpee,
the windope installer deletes SuSE boot information.
But SuSE doesn't - it copes with other operating systems
installed in the PC and retains other mainstream operating
system's boot information.
ntfsresize and grub worked real well for me. :-) Of course,
this isn't eactly a commutative problem -- make sure to
install XP first, if one has that option.

Or because of simple laziness when it comes to writing
installers. I suspect that's the real issue; when Win3.1
was written there were *no* other bootsystems in place
for x86 equipment. Of course Microsoft might have also
realized that this is a boon (doggle?) as well -- though
it's doubtful any customer would think so, if they are
even remotely aware of the bootloader issue.

Actually, I'm not 100% sure of that, but it's an interesting
question generally. GRUB might be smart enough to move
the bootsector, or Windows might have just set it up in
two places during initial installation, which means GRUB is
wiping out the master boot record but leaving the partition
boot record in place (and chaining to it).
I wish I knew. At least in the case of GRUB I can theoretically
look at GRUB's source code to find out.
<snip>
I wonder if there's a lawsuit in that?
Only if there's an OS on there for it to damage WHEN you install it.
And then it only wipes the MBR, so you can easily rewrite the MBR with a
proper one.
But if you install windows first, linux does it right.
(thought you'd know that)

Maybe, but guess who has a far bigger contingent of lawyers? :-)
oh, crap. Good point.
I'll admit it's a long shot but presumably one might make
a case that "fair trade" includes "recognizing one's
competitors when already installed" (assuming that the
system doesn't communicate that back to the mothership
for additional ammo or something). It looks tricky.
As it is, I suspect sloppy engineering more than deliberate
malfeance. One hopes for repair at some point, especially
since Microsoft knows about Linux. I certainly don't see
it as being "drop everything else" priority, though. :-)
