"Last week, Datamation published an article on the rise in value of
Linux job skills in todays economy. Linux system administration skills
are now the number 2 hottest IT job skill. In the last year, the value
of Linux skills has risen 50 percent, an astounding rise in a tough

That's the myth - that article provides no evidence whatsoever to support
that claim.

Exactly!

Here is a comment from the original Datamation article:

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/features/article.php/3832316/Hot-IT-Skills-Certified-and-Non-Certified-IT-Skills-in-Dem

"By cww July 30 2009 12:44 AMPDT

I often wonder where these statistics come from. In my part of
the world, I can't buy a Linux job. I've been a Linux
"Consultant in waiting" for a decade. One would think this was
Redmond WA rather than central MN. I have begun to suspect this
is like the ever popular "Shortage of Qualified people" myth
that is perpetuated by so many companies where qualified
actually means willing to work 60 hrs a week for $14k/yr. I have
even heard that the reason some outfits can't switch to Linux is
because there isn't any Linux talent available. If you will
offer even $50k a year, I can supply all the Linux talent you
want. In this employer's
market the ads are written so narrowly that the reason they
can't find anyone, is that no one
individual could possibly possess all those qualifications and
experience. And if they did, it's
likely they would not be impressed with $16/hr and working
weekends."

You probably are so dumb as to believe Linux salaries are up 50% over last
year.

I get the impression that both HPT and chrisv are "double wide
dwellers".

.. and what is so bad about living in a "double-wide"? Or, are you just

It means you're almost destitute. That's what's bad about it.

Doesn't mean you're a bad person - just financially unsuccessful.

I suspect you're a trailer dweller, (p)Rick. Not that you're man enough to
tell the truth.

No, it doesn't.

How do you know the person is financially unsuccessful? And what is your
definitin of "successfully successful"?

I suspect you are a kindergarten kid...

I have owned, and lived in, a single-wide, after previously owing a
condo. I sold the lot it was originally on, and bought a bigger parcel. I
sold the single-wide, and the land it sat on, and made a down payment on
another condo.

Then our definitions of destitute are different.

I know they're financially unsuccessful because they live in a trailer in a
trailer park.

I don't have one ... but I guess 5x to 8x the single person poverty level
income in the US would be considered successful.

So are you now living in a double-wide?

Lacking resources or the means of subsistence; completely impoverished

There are a great many people that live in what many people call a
trailer park that an interesting, varied, and fullfilling lifestyle.

Which is it, you don't have one, or 5x to 8x of the poverty level?

So, in your opinion, a single person would have to earn $54,150 to be
financially successful today? And a family of 4 would need 110,250 to
176,400?

I owned and lived in a single wide. I now own, and live in a condo.

I followed the links before I ever responded. Nowhere in them - nowhere -
is there any proof the value of Linux skills has risen 50% in the past year.

It's just more lying bullshit by "advocates".
