Left is Konsole, right is Gnome Terminal.
Linux doesn't belong anywhere near end users.

Rofl. Never heard of color mapping I guess? You're using rxvt-unicode,
right? Here, put
Urxvt.color4: #333355
in your ~/.Xresources, merge with
% xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
and launch mc in a new rxvt-unicode terminal. There you go. Konsole
and Gnome-terminal simply have color4 (ie. blue) mapped to a slightly
different shade of blue. Wow. What a revelation! What crapware!

One of the weaknesses of many desktop Linux programs is the application name
is not made clear on the window (nor elsewhere).

Nope. Just launched Konsole then Gnome Terminal. Then installed
Midnight Commander via the Ubuntu Software Center. It didn't show up in
the menus anywhere, and I remembered you could launch it via 'mc' from
the command line.
And those are the results.

Cue flatfish: "Tell me how Linux is ready for Plain Jayne again." :)
It is a silly thing to complain about the different background colors in
different terminal applications.
I actually thought he was going to discuss print color vs. display color.
I just explained all that to Grandma, and she took her dentures out and
threw them at me and told me to "Gett tthhh pffuck outtta mmuuhhh

I will say it is a weakness to not have the names of the apps associated

That's because Linux is a silly exercise for end users. Tell us why
anyone should have to - or will:
put 'Urxvt.color4: #333355' in your ~/.Xresources, merge with % xrdb
-merge ~/.Xresources and launch mc in a new rxvt-unicode terminal
Insano.
After I installed Midnight Commander via the Ubuntu Software Center, it
didn't show up in any of the menus. In fact, it didn't even say it
finished installing successfully. Thru experience I knew mc would
launch it from a command line.
Lots of hobbyware is like that - newbs will be clueless and figure the
installation just failed, so they'll try it again. But now the Ubuntu
Software Center says it's already installed. wtf? But it's not in the
menus, so where was it installed, and how do you get it started?
So the victims will end up Googling to find out "Why didn't the
installed program show up in the menus?" And they'll get 10 different
answers, and be shown various fixes, and have to figure out what version
of Gnome and whether they're running Unity or Gnome, and can they use
the Unity or Gnome Menu Editor, blah blah blah
And they will be angry and frustrated at the waste of time, and they
will give up on Linux in short order.
It's purely amateurish, with no project managers or budgets or timelines
or bosses. And very little testing.
And so it goes. Year after year after year.

Why the "rofl"?
I am aware of color mapping and Xresources ( I use them etensively for
emacs and xterm (I switched)). But opacity is available in the settings
for gnome terminal and much more likely to be tweaked accidentally.
The point that dfs makes IS valid. In any well thought out system the
default mappings SHOULD be the same IMO. ie Both should use the system
palette. I dont expect you to acknowledge this or even understand it. And
is why you should not be let near a base products design decision stage.

Except gnome-terminal has a perfectly good gui UI to tweak the colours
including ability to use predefined colour sets. If one is advanced
enough to "choose" something like rxvt then one could and should know
about about xresources. That said I do thnk they should use the same
default colour mappings. What IS a nightmare is when you start to run
different curses type apps in he terminal types and termcap issues
start to crop up.
As a side note only recently has 256 colour rxvt become more the
default. Google.

Try learning about how these things work before making a fool of

the gnome terminal gui UI.

But why? It are completely unrelated programs. It's their business how
they render whatever they have to display to the user. Elsewhere you
talk about using the 'system palette', only: there is no 'system
palette' for terminal color mappings.

Termcap issues? You are kidding, right. The termcap database has been
obsolete for many years. From 'man 5 termcap':
"The termcap database is an obsolete facility for describing the
capabilities of character-cell terminals and printers. It is retained
only for capability with old programs; new ones should use the

Once more, Hadron demonstrates his ignorance in not knowing that
curses is a library, not a type of application.

I'm currently developing an application using ncurses for the
interface and it is a joy to use. I can run test builds from the
console, via SSH from my Nokia N900 or from my Samsung Galaxy tab and
I don't have to worry about handling the screen size and terminal type
beyond respecting the number of lines and columns that the library
reports. In other words, exactly the problems that Termcap, Terminfo
and curses were designed to address.

I have stated my hypothesis why it doesn't bother me so much.
But where is your explanation why "reposting a link a few times" is not
spamming?
If he did, he did a very poor job. "termcap issues". Yeah, as if...
"terminal colors system palette". Yeah, sure...

Sounds 1337, doesn't it? ;-)
> I've had issues with characters sets and repainting in aptitude, but

Not once have I seen repainting issues in ncurses apps. And charset
issues are in your own hands (and may as well be font issues, ie. when
certain characters are not available in certain fonts).
Mhh, I do still have a ~/.terminfo/t/ directory with a terminfo
database for the Terminator terminal emulator, as there's no database
for that terminal included in /lib/terminfo. All terminals available
from the Debian repositories do have a perfectly fine entry there
though. It's nothing the user should ever have to worry about.

Screen repaint problems?
Piss poor programming.
Doesn't matter what module it is, what program, what OS.
It shouldn't happen unless the user is overloading his system and

only know that you said there was "piss poor programming" and that you
fail to demonstrate where and what.

But this is linux advocacy and this is an article that has been
extensively criticised, here and in its own comments.

Not only seem I to ignore it, I do ignore it.

Somehow you think this has something to do with the length of the
message. You know, in a newsreader it's no difference if I skip a long
post or a short post.

You're an idiot Chris.
Go waste someone else's time.

Thanks for admitting you don't have anything meaningful to say.
Pretty funny, the concept of somebody being able to waste Flounder's time
more than he wastes it himself, with his voluminous never-ceasing postings
of the same trolling material and jibes over and over and over and over and
over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over
and over and over, for years and years.

He's a monomaniac and exhibits clear signs of psychopathy. I pity
anyone who has to share meatspace with him.
Apparently, by his admission, that is not a worry.

so, according to you, it is OK for 7 to lie, smear, swear, misrepresent
the facts and in general act as a drooling imbecile as long as it "irks
the trolls"
never mind that the "trolls" kick his sorry ass to the curb every single
time he opens his trap in an attempt to spew the Linux "advocacy" you are
so accustomed to
I am sure it is "easy enaugh" for you to have no shame or regrets as a
functional retard like 7 does that kind of dirty work for you, right?

I'm talking about what bothers me, not what is "OK".
Do I have an obligation to reply every time that I don't approve? Really?
You're a spineless gorm Liarmutt.
You don't have the balls to speak what you really feel but instead
follow the Linux COLA cabal because you are too frightened of being
ostracized.
> You don't have the balls to speak what you really feel
Yes, I definitely lack the courage to post in a newsgroup what I think.
That's really something I would be afraid of.

You are wrong.

that's a weasel. let me connect the dots for you then.
you said: "I have stated my hypothesis why it doesn't bother me so much."
when pressed, you said: "You troll this group, he trolls trolls."
the "this group" quip points to the private little club that you and the
rest of the Linux "advocates" wish to have (see Homer's troll-free stats
for a reference) where it is OK to say anything you want and anyone who
disagrees is binned as a big bad troll.
so it bothers you that flatfish "trolls this group" because it is not OK
with you. the fact that u are on top of a soap box right here, right now
means that it bothers u more than the 340-liner from 7 because that
one... well... u know... it "trolls trolls" and that is OK with you
it just doesn't bother u so much
Was that easy enaugh?
>

u are the net nanny so u tell me
once would do but I've not seen it which makes you suspect of the
hypocrisy that afflicts the exclusionary elitists in "your group"
>

really
You have an obligation to respond to the nutjobs and their crazy/lying
bullshit. This includes 7 and Rex Ballard and Homer at a minimum.

... this newsgroup.

Note to Flounder: "Chris" is not "Chris Ahlstrom".
No wonder I call you "Flounder".
(And your claim is kiddy nonsense anyway, Full Mental Jackass).

Flounder confuses you with me. He is well into his "Memorial Day"
celebration, methinks. His whiskers are as wet as his brain.

Hahaha!
Actually you are correct... I did confuse you two but I just let thin
skinned Chris Hunter blather on and on.
Like I said, he needs to take a class in reading comprehension.
Darn those Sam Adams are powerful....!
This 'Chris' is not Chris Hunter.
Chris Hunter is a blithering idiot and shrieking liar: "the entire
German government, French government, most of Scandinavia, /all/ of
China, and much of India switched to Linux"
Chris is a German college student, I think. And very knowledgeable
about Linux.

And they prove a 1% market share doesn't mean Linux sucks...

Apologies.

Yea.
He is from UK.

Yes.
I guess I shouldn't jump on him too much about reading comprehension
since I'm not doing too good in this thread myself :)
Sorry Chris.
My bad.
Apologies!

even when u flounder u still manage to embarrass the "advocates" on the
uptake... :)

Why bother with that mentally-ill POS? Some Rex/7 BS notwithstanding,
we're still right 90% of the time. The trolls take the incorrect and
immoral side of pretty-much *every* issue, just do that they can be
part of their disgusting circle-jerk.
