The company wouldn't mention the iPad by name but was selling Apple's tablet
almost exclusively for the three-month span. Samsung's Galaxy Tab only
reached the US in November, at the end of the period, and wouldn't have been
a major factor. Best Buy has gone on record in the past as saying that the
iPad was cutting netbook sales in half in those retail stores that were
carrying the tablet and has just recently begun selling the iPad through its
online store.

Clearly a Microsoft monopoly err, attack on Freedom .... Surely the COLA
"advocates" scoffed at the iPad and assured is it would flop.
footnote : yes, I DO know that the iPad is Apple ....
Advocate predictions have been historically very poor. No real news there.
But what's interesting here to me is that people who buy iPads don't seem to
be bothered by monopolies, lock-in, herd mentality or any of the other
excuses.
Yes. Amazing isn't it. Jed (he of the green screen and rhymes and
riddles) was just explaining that Win 7 hasn't been a success at all

monopoly from the MS DOS days.
You mean iPad is killing Windows netbook sales, I believe.

Theorem: All positive integers are equal.
Proof: Sufficient to show that for any two positive integers, A and B, A = B.
Further, it is sufficient to show that for all N > 0, if A and B
(positive integers) satisfy (MAX(A, B) = N) then A = B.
Proceed by induction: induction
If N = 1, then A and B, being positive integers, must both be 1.
So A = B.
Assume that the theorem is true for some value k. Take A and B with
MAX(A, B) = k+1. Then MAX((A-1), (B-1)) = k. And hence
(A-1) = (B-1). Consequently, A = B.

I just see how the iPad opened up the world of computing to my wife. I've
had computers in the house literally since we've been married - which is a
long time ago. She's spent more time on the iPad in the 8 months since April
than the combined time she's ever spent on every computer and laptop I've
ever owned.
Personally I prefer to use the laptop with a keyboard and all my
apps/utilities but most computer users are more like her and less like me.

Yes. Windows 7 is the replacement for Windows Vista and so it goes
back to Windows 3.11 and then to DOS 5.
OTOH, it's easy to see why cheap computing products might be less
successful at Best Buy as Best buy tries to actively HIDE some of these
products. Retailers don't want the lower margin products to be popular.
Best Buy probably gets more out of the sale of a Mini than the Revo.

<quote>

Notice your typical unsubstantiated bullshit of how it's a flop. Meanwhile I
provided a link showing that Apple has made roughly $2 Billion dollars in
*profit* in 8 months of iPad sales.
"Idiot" doesn't begin to describe you.

There are several tablets now, ranging in price from $120 to $700
including e-readers like the Kindle, Sony E-Book, and other Linux
tablets at the low end, up to Android tablets with color screens and
the full compliment of Android applications, including The Galaxy at
the high end.
The iPad meets one market's needs, but the iPod touch and iPhone can
often do many of the things people want to do with a NetBook.
The problem with a Windows 7 NetBook is that it needs so much RAM, a
power-hungry hard disk, and constantly needs the hard drive - as a
result, the battery doesn't last long enough to even compete with a
laptop. These days, there are 14 inch laptops that can run for 8
hours, and most Windows 7 NetBooks have less battery capacity and only
last an hour or two.
In effect, Microsoft killed the NetBook market.
The good news is that there are fire sales on Windows 7 NetBooks.
WalMart is selling several models for as little as $229 each. That's
almost what I spend for my Linux NetBook when I first bought it 2
years ago. I gave one to my daughter, and loaned one to my wife. She
won't give it back. She did ask me to put Ubuntu on it, which only
took about 10 minutes using a memory stick image I downloaded using
the NetBook (over a WiFi connection) - and in about 20 minutes, she
had all of her files back and had installed the Music composition
software she wanted - by herself. She's also thrown a few games on
there as well. I doubt she will EVER give it back. Now she's
cruising e-bay trying to find another Linux NetBook for the Church.
> Best Buy has gone on record in the past as saying that the

I found it amusing that, when the iPAD first came out, so many of the
sales clerks didn't have a clue about it. They tried to push people
to NetBooks or Laptops. Now, they've done their homework and they
really know how to pitch the iPad and the iPod. And the phone
department has dummy versions of the Android phones, but has a real
working version of the iPhone which the sales clerk will gladly help
you with immediately.
When I asked to look at the Droid 2, because all that was on display,
the clerk acted like I wanted to do something disgusting. He groaned
and said that he had one in the cabinet that he might be able to
demonstrate. When he pulled it out of the cabinet, it wasn't charged
up - he asked me if I could come back in an hour. I figured if he was
that excited about it - I'd take my business elsewhere.
I've noticed that the sales clerks have also been pushing customers
looking at NetBooks to the 14 inch Notebooks. Given that they only
cost about 5% more for the larger screen, and full capabilities - it's
not surprising that people aren't buying NetBooks.
The bottom line is that there are MANY factors killing NetBook sales,
but probably the biggest one is Microsoft.

Yes, Apple sells as many as they are willing to produce - at 3 times

Trying to squirm away by being a literalist? Well then: how about
you showing us then where he said "Success".
Just make sure that you set the bar for non-ambiguity as high as
you've just done here. For example, the standard you've set for

Anyway, that being said, the high prices of most of the netbooks out there

Nope. You are lying, "-hh".
"Imperfection" does not equal "bad" or even "undesirable". It was,
obviously, the best "pad" computer available. Consumers regularly
live with what they consider imperfections in the products they buy,
especially when choices are limited.

I recall that during one of threads in this group very shortly after
the iPad first came out, that this issue was raised and that Apple had
a ipod to USB connector that would let you attached not just cameras
(which was advertized) but also external hard drives.
Does that actually work? Can you attach external drives directly?
But the iPAD doesn't support any SDHC slots does it?
Of course, if you also have a Mac, you can just share or upload/
download files with the Mac via the WiFi connection. Heck, you could
just rsync. You could also rsync with Linux.
Not nearly as long or as much loss as Sony and the PS3.

People are entitled to their own opinion - not their own facts.

There's a difference between a promotional sale involving a loss-leader vs.
a generic statement that something is being sold at a loss.
For how many years now has Rex been claiming that Dell loses money on every
PC they sell?
> Anyway, that being said, the high prices of most of the netbooks out there

Agree.
> Good luck in finding definite information on price versus

For specific claims like how 'Dell loses money on every PC they sell' - a
quick check of Dells financials (revenue, expenses, profit, profit-margin,
etc) for their PC division would give a good assessment of what these
numbers are. There's no reason to believe that other PC makers like HP are
doing anything radically different that they're profit margins would be
significantly different.

Depends if other products are lumped into the PC division. And they may
still be selling some units at a loss, while selling most others are a
profit.

They key is 'most' are being sold at a profit. For the most recent quarter
Dell made a profit of $822 million or more than $63 million/week. At the end
of the day when you average everything out they are making a profit on their
PC sales.
There are very few companies that make a profit on every item they sell.
When a grocery store has a sale for <item> at <great price> they are
intentionally taking a loss on the one product. But they're not stupid and
they know in the end this small loss will more than be outweighed by profits
on other items.

I'm sure I'm not alone, in thinking that it would sell well. Linux
advocates having "issues" with Apple's design decisions is hardly
surprising. It doesn't make us blind to the fact that Apple has a lot

Bullshit. With all of the highly critical posts that were made, had

Too bad you didn't say this "nifty gizmo...probably sell well" stuff
anytime before today. Is there any particular reason why you put it
in quotes to infer that it was a quotation? Or was that just YA
dishonest misdirection attempt, by putting a brand new claim in quotes
to try to infer that it was something that Chrisv has said before,

The iPad is overhyped.
As an Apple computing device, it's about typical so far. The media hype
machine just makes it seem much more larger than life than it really is. This
nonsense from Best Buy is an example.
It turns out that they can't even sell HDTVs very well either.

The problem came when Microsoft tried to make them Windows XP - and
later Windows 7 machines. They aren't Windows machines and anyone who
buys a NetBook with Windows 7 starter thinking that they will get
anything even remotely close to a Windows 7 Laptop selling for just a
few dollars more - is wasting time and money.
When the NetBook was first introduced, it was more like a PDA with
attitude. NetBooks like the ASUS EEE 4G and Aspire One didn't try to
deliver a massive PC with all of the capabilities of Windows, but they
did try to offer far more than a typical PDA or SmartPhone. The
screen was big enough for a real web browser (FireFox) and the
keyboard, though not full sized, was big enough that once you got used
to it, you could type fast enough to take notes in a meeting or during
a class. You could also take notes with drawing using Writer or
Presents. I still use my netbook when I don't want to go to a meeting
and just take notes. And Linux is perfect for that purpose. The
Linux netbook is also perfect for those long airplane trips - the
battery lasts long enough for a transcontinental flight, especially if
I edit files on the SDHC storage instead of the mechanical drive.
The Linux NetBook filled a practical niche, and did it well. The
Windows NetBooks are more like wannabe Windows machines than can't cut
it. Most of the time you can't even get more than 4 applications
running at the same time. Try to bring up Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Outlook, and IE - and something "just won't start". No warnings, no
complaints, it just does nothing. The other 3 applications are fine,
but after than, your just can't start any new ones.
Whether this is because of restrictions intentionally put into Windows
7 Starter, or whether it's just that 1 gig of RAM isn't enough to do
useful work, I don't know and don't care.
On Black Friday, several of the best buy stores had hundreds of little
Android devices on the shelves. Most were tablets, some had a base
like a desktop mount, and a few had support for USB-A connections - so
you could add a keyboard and hard drive, but those devices are sold
out already. Actually, they sold of of most of that stock in the
first week. Now, the only thing left on the shelves is the monochrome
Linux reader/tablets like the Kindle, the Sony E-Book, the Nook, and
so on. Then Samsung came out with a nice tablet for about $500 that
looks pretty exciting. Too bad it's locked in a glass case so you
can't actually see what it can do.
> Certainly not in price! :-D
How much is a MacBook Air? How big? How heavy? The 11 inch display
costs almost $1200 at Best Buy. At Wal-Mart a 10.5 inch NetBook sells
for $238. Add Linux to that NetBook and you get about the same power
and capability - at a lower price.
If you want the 13 inch Air, that's almost $1600. But on the next
table over is an assortment of 14 inch Windows 7 laptops - including
several Linux-ready models that can give you better performance - with
Linux - at about $400 to $600. But because they've been lobotomized
with Windows 7 - they have to be sold at a loss to get them out the
door. WalMart is selling surplus machines during the Christmas
season.
I wonder how long before Wal-Mart orders a bunch of Laptops or
NetBooks pre-configured with Linux and puts THOSE on their retail
shelves? I'd love to see the conversation when the Microsoft lawyer
tries to tell the Wal-mart lawyer that Linux on the shelves is
"Damaging the Microsoft Brand". Wal-mart might even pull ALL of the
Windows machines and put up ONLY Linux machines in their super-marts.
Staples has been hurting bad from selling PCs at clearance prices -
for over two years.

Indeed. And back office reports and data mining frequently lead to sales

Which means precisely what? That the iPad is going to have an initial

Best Buy can't even sell HDTVs very well these days.
On the other hand, they try to avoid stuff like netbooks or nettops
going so far as to hide them. They were doing this to the Revo. If they
had sales problems with that device then it is little wonder.
This is in stark contrast to Frys where everything is displayed
together pretty much on equal terms. The nettops are in the corner but
they don't have the appearance of being intentionally hidden.
You have to be dumb like an Apple fanboy to take anything Best Buy
has to take at face value.
