Amazing. He talks as though there is some kind of important stability or
validity on the part of windows. What a joke.

And Ballmer, what a pompous, delusional, junk selling asshole.

Here's a reason why EVERYONE should be running scared.

1) Millions of NIGERIAN children with free PC's. There's a reason most of
the 419 scams come out of nigeria, and now having millions of people with
computers to run such scams will only make things worse.

I didn't say one fucking word about taking PC's away from anyone, so why

No. Notice where I said "free PC's", not "Free Linux PC's"? No, you
didn't notice that, did you? Of course not, that would interfere with your
attempts to put words in my mouth.

Grow the fuck up.

> When folks carp about Gates giving free stuff out to the masses in

Free medical care is not the same thing as free PC's, especially to areas
rife with corruption and massive phishing culture. This is the ultimate
"teach a man to phish" story.

That's because almost all computers are MS-Windows based computers.

What is it you think you're proving? Where in my post did I say anything
about taking a PC away from someone? I didn't. I said giving them PC's
should make anyone scared.

Do you understand the difference between not giving something, and taking
away something one already has? Apparently not.

"A criminal element"? 419 scams are "legitimate" businesses in Nigeria,
employing many thousands. The government doesn't do anything about them.
The children are being taught that this is the way you make a living by
example.

This isn't racist, it's a nationwide cultural issue, regardless of race.
It's no different than talking about rampant pircacy in asia, where there
are people on the street selling you pirated software and movies out in the
open. So too are 419's out in the open and rampant everywhere in Nigeria,
according to various reports i've read.

Perhaps the country should consider solving it's problems before handing
out tools to make them worse. It would be like the government giving away
millions of handguns, then wondering why gun related crime goes through the
roof, despite a noble reason (giving people the benefit of self defense) to
do so.

I didn't say to deny anyone access to computers. I said, *GIVING* MILLIONS

How, precisely do you get "I want to deny them access to computers" from

from that?

More telling is that yet again your inability to correctly read the
English language puts you in a rather embarrassing situation.

Erik never said anyone should be denied anything, He did say, in a
humorous post, that a lot of us should be running scared (hint tuning
our SPAM filters to Willy Boaster type levels of perfection).

And I quote:

Poor Peter. Caught out again twisting the truth in a "vile and scumbag"

The "true linux advocate", "kernel hacker", "emacs user" and "swapfile
expert" Hadron Quark equates "exporting software" to "having millions of
people with computers to run such scams". And he thinks that both are not
racist.

Yeah right. One is doing legit business. The other is Erik implying that the
nigerians will for the millions of them run 419-scams if you just give them
computers.

I don't see that point (taking vs giving) as relevant to the real
issue here. You seemed to imply that Nigerian children are somehow
predisposed to being criminals (just by being Nigerian evidently).
Some of us find that idea a bit offensive. If that is not what
you meant, please clarify.

Why exactly should I be afraid of giving a PC to a Nigerian child?
What makes you think he/she will misuse it? Is just growing up in
the same country as a bunch of criminals enough to corrupt all the
youth of an entire nation? Should I shun the children of my friends
in Chicago when I hear of organized crime problems there?

I'm just trying to understand the logic of your statement.

Nope, "true linux advocate", "kernel hacker", "emacs user" and "swapfile

It was outright racism from Erik Funkenbusch

Only if you imply some broad generalization about Ireland's children
based on that fact.

Honestly, I want to believe that Erik did not mean his joke in the
way it was received by many here, but words are often slippery
beasts and people are often much more quick to take offense when
possible prejudice is perceived. Slinging insults back at those
offended people only deepens the offense. I would suggest the
following:

- Understand that human language is imprecise, and two people
can read the same statement and come away with different shades
of meaning.

- Realize that what you meant to say is actually less important
than what others think you said.

- You will never change someone's mind by yelling at them or
insulting them. More likely you will deepen their conviction.

- Make an effort to understand the viewpoint of those that were
offended. You don't need to agree with it, but understanding
is necessary before real dialog can occur. Asking honest,
polite questions is a good path toward understanding.

- If someone is offended by something you say, apologize for any
unintentional offense and attempt to clarify the meaning of the
earlier statement. Even if you doubt the sincerity of the
offended party or fail to change their mind, you will make a
better impression on others who witness the exchange.

I tend to try and take people's words in the most positive,
charitable way possible... and when I read Erik's 'joke' my
first thought was 'ouch, that's going to ruffle some feathers'.
Erik should really try to understand why that sort of statement
has that kind of effect if he wants to avoid stepping in it
again. This is something more than just COLA bias at play
here, it runs a bit deeper and could land him in a spot of
trouble if he makes a similarly statement in a board room or
to a reporter.

Just a thought.

I do. See above.

As for apologizing for other peoples misinterpretation? Get a grip.

*snip*

Not everything needs analyzing to the 10th degree.

It was humour. It was in NO way racist. End of story.

It indicates more of a problem in your mind set if you think his
commenst were, in any way, derogatory about black children over, say,
white children.

You do know that white people live in Nigeria too don't you?

As usual the biggest issues are raised by those who *want* to find

The origin of most 419 scams is not really the issue here. What
conclusions one chooses to draw about Nigerian children based on
that fact is the issue. If Erik did not intend for those
conclusions to be drawn, then he needs to clarify his statement.

Only if you try to imply something about all black children based
on that observation. Suggesting, for example, that we steer black
children toward athletics rather than academics based on the racial
make-up of the NBA would be very offensive. I can imagine a joke
involving free basketballs that might go over just as poorly as
Erik's.

> Does any subject involving country, race or colour offend you?

No, only when the topic is used to draw broad conclusions about
individuals based on a group they are only indirectly associated
with. Step back for a moment and try and hear that joke from
the perspective of a Nigerian parent or child.

Not even then, because there's nothing wrong with being a SW exporter.
No one takes offense when someone says "people in country X tend to be
smart, good-looking, and virtuous".

here, I'll say it. More Nigerians use the 419 scam than others. Here's
another fact - most Nigerians are black,

In other news, most Nazis in the second world war were white Germans.

What does black or white have to do with it? The offensive
implication was that Nigerian children are prone to being
criminal. It would be just as offensive if you said French
children or American children or left handed children. Maybe
racist is the wrong word... but then I don't think I was the
one who used it (I believe I said 'offensive').

> As usual the biggest issues are raised by those who *want* to find

Perhaps, but that is the world we live in. You can either
attempt understand it and communicate more clearly, or you
can blunder through obliviously with no regard to how you
are perceived. Just don't act all shocked if the latter
course leaves a lot of people pissed off at you.

Tell yourself that the opinions of the COLA faithful is
unimportant to you, but this actually goes deeper than that.
If you fail to understand why the original joke was so
offensive to some, then you are in danger of making a similar
mistake some day and influence the opinion of someone who DOES
matter to you. It is the sort of mistake that often ruins
careers and political aspirations.

Believe it or not, I actually usually appreciate the views of
you and Erik and others often labeled as trolls on this forum.
I'm not criticizing Erik's statement just to pile on with the
rest of the COLA hoard. I'm honestly trying to point out why
some find it offensive in hopes that those sorts of mistakes
can be avoided in the future. It just gets in the way of the
technology related arguments that we really come here for.

Nothing, but Erik's original statement went farther than that.
He did not just mention that 419 scams originate in Nigeria; he
suggested we should fear giving computers to Nigerian children,
implying they will just be used to run more scams. Try saying
that to the face of a Nigerian child and see how that joke goes
over.

OK, I evidently stated that poorly. I was trying to make a point
that the problem was not with the observation about 419 scams,
but the joke involving school children that was linked to it.

>
> Why? Do they deny the 419 scam is linked with Nigeria?

No, but why should that make us fear Nigerian school children?
Should they be denied a better education because of the actions
of a relatively small segment of their population? And yes,
I understand it was meant as a joke, but that makes it no less
offensive to many people.

Perhaps, but a hell of a lot of the world thinks that way. I'm
just trying to explain it to you. For what its worth, I don't
believe you or Erik or anyone here really has anything against
Nigerian children... but careless words can still give that
impression.

This kind of sounds like an argument about the US justice system,
doesn't it? Drugs run rampant in major cities and the government
seems unable to stop it. Oh, and don't light sentences to
criminals imply that the justice system condones it?

Perhaps you should make such a statement in the workplace, after
all, I am sure your employer will agree (not). For one, the OLPC
project applies to multiple countries, not just Nigeria. I am
sure that in such a benevolent project that the PC's would go to

However, such is quite to the contrary. When Australian citizens
gave up their weapons not long ago, there was a remarkable
increase in crime. North Highlands suburb of Sacramento,
California enjoyed a lower rate of crime than Sacto. The LEO's
knew that one out of every three households owned a firearm.

Oh, you must live in one of those states where the citizens are

Exactly - positive comments cannot usually be considered racist, only the
negative ones but I guess some here don't know the difference between
compliments and racism so some examples :-

Mentioning the high quality of german cars would not be racist, mention of
german towels on beaches would be.

Refering to Americans for their scientific achievements is not racist,
refering to them as all being Trailer trash would be.

Refering to the british input to the computer revolution (don't forget the
world wide web was invented by a brit) wouldn't be racist but the comments
Jay Leno has been known to make about bad teeth would be (I'm british)

As I understand it the 419 is not really legal, but the government
their is corrupt and does nothing about it (probably gets a cut).
It amounts to the same thing anyway.

> Children have parents, and uncles, and siblings, etc.. who will all have

This assumes that most Nigerians would engage in scamming given the
chance, and that is the assumption that many find offensive. The 419
scams are believed to be run by only a few very well organized gangs,
and while the efforts are usually organized from Nigeria, often the
emails don't even originate from there. These scams require contacts
in the Nigerian banking industry and the government. The average
Nigerian would never be able to attempt it. Heck, most probably don't
even know what a 419 scam is... it really is limited to a rather small
slice of the population.

Yes, crime and government corruption is a real problem in Nigeria;
believe me I know, my father in-law lived there for years and oh
boy does he have some stories. But he also has a lot of great
stories about the warmth and generosity of the average Nigerian
citizens... you know, that vast majority that are not criminal gang
members or corrupt government official.

I don't expect I'll change your mind on this, but I've said my bit
so I'll probably drop of this thread now.

Isn't it possible that cheap PC's will allow Nigerian kids (some of
them, anyway) to improve their lot in life? Maybe that of their
country, too? I thought that was the idea behind OLPC. Idealistic, I
know.

BTW, you should relax a little. It's more effective.

actually, yes they *do* criminalize it, it's where the number 419 comes

Further, I question your claim that most of the 419 scams come from

What multiple convicted felon Microsoft is scared of is the huge Open

Sometimes they take action:

Nigeria also contains many businesses that provide false documents
used in scams; after a scam involving a forged signature of Nigerian
President Olusegun Obasanjo in summer 2005, Nigerian authorities
raided a market in the Oluwole section of Lagos. The police seized
thousands of Nigerian and non-Nigerian passports, 10,000 blank
British Airways boarding passes, 10,000 United States money orders,
customs documents, false university certificates, 500 printing
plates, and 500 computers

It's growing in other countries now, but Nigeria was where it first
became big, and is probably still where most of it comes from. Lagos
has the necessary support structure, as can be seen by what was taken in
the raid mentioned above.

That has become a serious problem for legitimate Nigerian businesses, as
many email filters trash anything with the word "Nigeria" in it, which
can make it hard to them to conduct international business.

Message-ID: <1q2gfzb1mwxca$.d...@funkenbusch.com>

419 scams are not criminalized in Nigeria. THAT'S the problem.

If they weren't *criminalized* they wouldn't be illegal. They *are*
illegal, whether enforcement takes place or not.

Message-ID: <16y6fnis...@funkenbusch.com>

No, I'm saying that Nigeria doesn't criminalize that behavior. It's
a normal "legitimate" business there.

You say it's illegal but unenforced *now*. But in that message you said
it's "legitamte business" in Nigeria. Which is it? What will be your
stance in a couple of more posts? That's it's "encouraged" while
illegal? That it's "frowned upon" but not stopped?

Message-ID: <1n844iio...@funkenbusch.com>

"A criminal element"? 419 scams are "legitimate" businesses in
Nigeria, employing many thousands. The government doesn't do
anything about them. The children are being taught that this is the
way you make a living by example.

There's that "legitimate business" again.

This isn't racist, it's a nationwide cultural issue, regardless of
race. It's no different than talking about rampant pircacy in asia,
where there are people on the street selling you pirated software
and movies out in the open. So too are 419's out in the open and
rampant everywhere in Nigeria, according to various reports i've
read.

Golly, Erik! I don't know where to begin!

Do you go to the DuFS KKK rallies on weekends or something?

What illegal activities are the Jews pulling off, with their sneaky
little ways, what with owning all of the media and controlling the
banking of the whole world?

How about all of the Mexicans? Are they stealing stuff from your back
porch, and breaking windows to reach in and grab your clock radios?

Enough of that. Let's get back to the 419 scams. I don't want to pull a
funkenbusch by shifting the subject away from the subject.

Let's see if I have this straight. In Nigeria 419 scams are against the
law, but they're "legitimate business" as well.

Right so far?

OK. They're also evidently taught to everybody in the country, or
nearly so. At least enough that having more computers in the country is
a *bad* thing because so much of the populace is, or will be, involved
in illegal "legitimate business" activities.

How am I doing so far?

And while we're on the subject, let's compare it to something else
that's wildly rampant. We all know that piracy is so rampant in Asia
that you can go down to the local market and buy pirated Windows
alongside all of the latest movies.

Am I still on the right path?

Finally, to sum it all up, none of this can be considered racism
because we're not accusing them of being bad people. It's not their
fault after all. It's a cultural thing, and they just need to come to
grips with what's wrong with their culture and fix it, then they'll be
"safe" enough to trust giving computers to the kids. You know this
because you read reports. That means it isn't *your* bias if any
exists: it's the bias of the reports you read.

I think I captured most of the essence. But do let me know if I maybe
missed a thing or two.

This just leaves me one question that currently comes to mind. Maybe
there will be more later, but for now one really puzzling thing sticks
in my head: Did you get the "reports" directly from the Grand Wizard,
or was this something faxed to you from one of the KKK branch offices?

>> Further, I question your claim that most of the 419 scams come from

Erik is naturally lying like he always does.
While there are certainly nigerian 419-scams going on all the time, they are
dwarved by the phishing scams originating in the US. Which in turn make
just a part of the general spam.

But those are done by his fellow KKK members, and therefore OK

Security is one of those funny things. You can talk about being "more"
secure, but there's no such thing. A vulnerability is a vulnerability, and
even one makes you just as insecure as anyone else. Security is a binary
condition, either you are or you aren't.

Whether he believes that trash or not is irrelevant. He *posts* it.

I suspect that it is a combination of his being a racist and a fear of
millions of kids growing up with a linux computer, forever "spoiled" for
the "One True Redmond Way" because they know better when grown up

What is clear by now that it was not at all "humour", as Eriks lapdog Hadron
Quark so desperately wants to tell us now to deflect the shit which has hit
the fan and now is backfiring at Erik and his astroturfer gang.
Erik meant every word of what he wrote, as his follow-ups clearly show it.

So yes, Erik is a racist. Just like DumbFullShit or flatfish.

Why am I not surprised that most windows users posting and trolling in cola
are actually stupid enough to be a racist?
And Hadron Quark naturally had to chime in with his bullshit

erik may well be right, most of the 419 scams may well originate in
Nigeria, I don't know. But to claim that all 419 scams must somehow
originate from nigeria because they are 419 scams is stupid, and I am
surprised Erik would make such a stupid claim.

Yeah, it sounds like an incredible leap of faith to assume that
because people are getting PCs in a country that overlooks PC scams is
going to lead to more scams. All these people needed was a computer to
bring to work and they would have been scamming all this time? Or are
they going to start their own scam? Or is the education opportunities
made available to them from having PCs will make them more qualified
to run the scam and so they will be hired to work their instead of one
of the millions of other legit jobs?
