Microsoft says turn off Windows feature to protect Windows

,----[ Quote ]
| There's no real reason for SMB2, (Server Message Block 2),
| a Microsoft network file and print-sharing protocol that
| ships with Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows
| 7, to exist. All it does is duplicate the basic network
| file and print functionality that Windows has provided for
| over a decade. But, SMB2 is in there, it is broken, and,
| now it can be used to take over PCs.
|
| Microsoft admits that the problem is real. Mark Wodrich and
| Jonathan Ness, part of the MSRC (Microsoft Security
| Response Center) engineering team wrote that an
| experimental exploit is already out and that it can gain
| "complete control of the targeted system and can be
| launched by an unauthenticated user." Just what you didn't
| need.
|
| There is a way to fix it. Well, sort of. You have to turn
| SMB2 off.

Microsoft: No TCP/IP patches for you, XP

,----[ Quote ]
| Microsoft late last week said it won't patch Windows XP for a pair of bugs
| it quashed Sept. 8 in Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.
|
| The news adds Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and SP3 to the no-patch list |
| that previously included only Windows 2000 Server SP4.
|
| [...]
|
| The bugs in question are in Windows' implementation of TCP/IP, the Web's
| default suite of connection protocols. All three of the vulnerabilities
| highlighted in the MS09-048 update were patched in Vista and Server 2008.
| Only two of the trio affect Windows Server 2000 and Windows XP, Microsoft
| said in the accompanying advisory, which was refreshed on Thursday.
|
| [...]
|
| During the Q&A, however, Windows users repeatedly asked Microsoft's
| security team to explain why it wasn't patching XP, or if, in certain
| scenarios, their machines might be at risk. "We still use Windows XP and we
| do not use Windows Firewall," read one of the user questions. "We use a
| third-party vendor firewall product. Even assuming that we use the Windows
| Firewall, if there are services listening, such as remote desktop, wouldn't
| then Windows XP be vulnerable to this?"

My point is that sometimes you have to turn certain things off
in order to satisfy or make other things work.

It's OS agnostic.

Flatfish's only point is an anti-Linux agenda, to discourage
legitimate Linux advocacy in a Linux advocacy Usenet group. It
uses any means possible, including ad hominems, libel, etc.

I see a day when all of this shall cease. Microsoft's time has
come, the monopoly will dwindle away, so will all the trolls in
this newsgroup.

The availability of court documents on the Internet as evidence
has exposed the corporation for what it is, little concern over
ethics. Others have provided repositories for those documents,
when court cases closed.

The recent publication of training techniques with sales people,
introducing subtle lies as truth has been interesting. They
haven't learned.

The educational sector has been exposing Linux. In the US, that
sector has not had as great an impact, as it appears to be a
controlled entity by the wealthy and influential. One only need
to look at a syllabus of any institution.

In countries outside the US, it has had less of an impact.
Companies like Microsoft are tended to be looked at with less
favouritism, because they are US and as an outsider, competing
with the local industry. US imperialism has not helped that
image. Where one wants to educate as many as practical given
finances, Linux has been able to fill a niche in bringing
computing tools and resources, giving the most bang for the "buck".

Awwww come on now, guys.
This has to do with Google Earth, and flatfish has always been a tad
emotional about it...

Years ago, I remember the Windows Enthusiasts pointing out in this group
that Google Earth was available for Windows, but not for Linux.
Shortly afterwards, Google came up with a package (I use the word loosely)
for Linux.
In layman's terms, the instructions were:-

1. Download a file
2. Change permissions (to make it executable) as per instructions
3. Run it.

I (yes, even I) got Google Earth working fine, but not poor flatfish.
In fact, he wrote to say that not only could *he* not install it under
Linux, but neither could TWELVE of his friends.

From memory, I think that he'd missed step 2.

It was a bad hair day (week?!) for him.
Do cut the poor soul a bit of slack? :-)

An amazing discovery was the evangelism document. It gave a
plausible explanation of much of the trolling in this newsgroup
and in other Internet forums.

[quote]
In the Mopping Up phase, Evangelism's goal is to put the final
nail into the competing technology's coffin, and bury it in the
burning depths of the earth. Ideally, use of the competing
technology becomes associated with mental deficiency, as in, "he
believes in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and OS/2."

Just keep rubbing it in, via the press, analysts, newsgroups,
whatever. make the complete failure of the competition's
technology part of the mythology of the computer industry.

We want to place selection pressure on the companies and
individuals that show a genetic weakness for competitor's
technologies, to make the industry increasingly resistant to such
unhealthy strains, over time.

Out of curiosity, I looked it up in Ubunutu's Synaptic and
installed it. Not bad, works very well. Best of all, Windows is
not needed to use it.

Indeed HPT, using Mozilla Thunderbird as NTTP client, with the Mail User
Agent add on installed, it is very easy to distinct the genuine posters
from the Toilet clog forger.

The dumb ass removes the mail user agent data from his headers in the
hope he is able to fool the group.

Poor Toilet Clog, typically Windross luser incompetence. What else could
