Over the years the Linux community has failed to make an enticing,
consistently easy to use distribution in my opinion. Apart from that,
there has been an enormous amount of duplication of effort because of
the hundreds of Window Managers, widget sets and distributions. I'm
disappointed that a COMPANY like Google has to step in to put some
order in this great mess.

What *is* known is that Google will use a new graphics system,
hopefully one that combines printing with display output to once and
for all solve the problem of what's printed on paper not matching
what's on the screen (something Windows solved decades ago). And
hopefull they've created a good-looking widget and icon set, along with
a consistently easy-to-use program installation and system
configuration. Most Linux distros often seem to be targeted at
experienced users ('power users'), not relative novices. I hope this
new windowing system will be based on OpenGL, so 3D and games will be
well supported.

You cannot be serious.

Please!

So the solution to the "great mess" is a new graphics system, widget style
and icon set, easy-to-use program installation, and system configuration?
This guy is not using both is neurons. No he is not!

Hum ... like Compiz has been doing for years, and before anyone else?

From what I have read, Chrome OS is *not* a desktop operating system but a
thin client for mainly web apps and sites, in particular those from Google.

As for 3D games, good look with that. I can see it now "Downloading level:
15 minutes remaining...", and that is on a good connection.

Regards.

FUD and an outright lie.

Above the wailing & moaning of the trolls, High Plains Thumper was
heard to say:

The OP used an anonymous remailer, which is why I didn't see it, & you
have to wonder why.

When I saw the recent coverage, I immediately thought
"a crippled version of the Linux-in-firmware that already exists".
http://google.com/search?q=Splashtop+Linux
With Splashtop, however, you can still have an on-disk OS.
Google's doesn't support HDDs.
Chrome OS is a takeoff on M$'s & App-hole's tactics
of *get them in the casino and keep them there*.

It's not applicable to old/existing hardware;
it will be of no interest if you're not buying a new computer
--and not even then for normal people (who want control).

...and, of course, the troll Subject line
ignores the fact that Linux will run on damned near anything,
so "failed" is complete crap
--especially when compared to this crippleware.

Your brilliant forensics answers a question I have long wondered about:
why there is no TV show named "CSI: Clovis".

Loads of tripe.

Variety is what everyone wants. It gives developers and users
the power to do the same things differently.

I use compiz and can't do without it.
I would hate it it it were not a duplication of effort that makes it look
similar but not the same as other desktops.

The Mint forum is a vibrant place.
One of the reasons is that they have Community Editions
with boot-to-a-desktop CDs for Gnome, KDE, Xfce, or Fluxbox
and they're working on an LXDE edition.
Something for about everybody.

There was a recent discussion there about moonOS
which is a Mint derivitive using Enlightenment.
More asymptotic progression toward pleasing everybody.

Indeed, Q00k and Timmytroll de Icaza still seem to be around and The Bee
has nymshifted at least tree times yesterday.

Let's hope the rest of the imbeciles stay away permanent.

No surprise there.

Did it..

I'm afraid that's a very big *hope*, Marti.

Wintrolls are idiots & many have great difficulty
realizing that to walk, they need to put one foot
in front of the other *repeatedly*,
& that they don't necessarily need to use their knuckles at all.
