Thumbs up for Android and the G1

,----[ Quote ]
| I have seen the future and it is Android-shaped.
|
| As much as I have lusted after an iPhone (my current plan would have been too
| expensive to dump) and longed to leave the clutches of T-Mobile (see my
| previous columns), having had the Android-based T-Mobile G1 in my sweaty
| hands for a couple of weeks has changed my mind about both staying with
| T-Mobile and wanting an iPhone.

It may soon be possible to put OpenMoko platforms on second-hand (discarded)
iPhones.

Linux finally loaded onto iPhone!

| Linux fans who have been waiting for Linux to come the iPhone and iPod Touch
| need wait no longer – the breakthrough has finally been made, years after
| Linux found its way onto earlier iPod models. There’s a way to go before the

First steps for Linux on iPhone

,----[ Quote ]
| The Linux on the iPhone project has released the first results of its work.
| The current port of Linux includes a bootloader, OpeniBoot, which allows the
| user to select booting either the iPhone OS or the Linux port. This first
| port is very limited though, as the demonstration video that has been
| released shows, there is no touchscreen support for interacting with the
| device; instead a USB console is used to type commands.

The iPhone Is Now Doomed

,----[ Quote ]
| I cannot claim to be a developer, but I have been watching the whole iPhone
| application development issues with interest. As of today’s news, it appears
| that the iPhone development process is like this:
|
| 1. Ask Apple for permission to make an application.
| 2. Sign a non-disclosure agreement.
| 3. Invest time and money into an iPhone application.
| 4. Ask Apple for permission to sell or give away your application.
| 5. If Apple says YES: start making money and hope Apple does not change
| their minds.
| If Apple says NO: shut up and deal with it. If you say anything, Apple
| can sue you, further raising the wasted investment money.

I don't get this. People buy the iPhone for the /software/ that runs on the
iPhone... not the hardware. If someone really wants to run Linux that bad
then get another phone and put Linux on it. Why would anyone take the
iPhone... remove the best feature (the software) and replace it with Linux?

This is getting pathetic. People could not care less what "software" runs on
that phone. They want the whole gamut, touchscreen and all.

Why would anyone want a iPhone at all?

Apart from that: Why run linux on it? Because they can

Of course they care about the "software" that runs on a phone. They may not
care who makes the software and what license it's under but they care about
the usability and features of the software. The software on the iPhone is
all integrated incredibly well which makes the features on the phone easier
to use than most other phones. People *do* care about that.

Ask the 10+ million people who already bought one.

> Apart from that: Why run linux on it? Because they can

That's about the only reason. From a hardware perspective there are some
better phones than the iPhone. But what sets the iPhone apart from the
others is the combination of good hardware and excellent software.

It's the typical nerd wet dream. They conquer the locked device and say
"Linux runs". They'll probably get some half arsed window manager up,
run a terminal and say "it works, I'll leave the rest to the 'community'
now.". What then happens is that fanboyz like Linonut strut around
saying "Kewl <grin> - it meets my needs" even though he does not have
one, he never saw one, and hasn't a clue how complete it is.

FFS, its like the awful phone which could not even make calls - who the
fuck wants to ruin a good iPhone with Linux when they don't even have
touch screen working?!?!?!? This is the type of "advocacy" that linux
does not need - people listening to the hype and breaking their devices
and being RTFM'd when they ask for help.

You can not be this stupid. Can you?

Have you SEEN the SW running on an iPhone. It is wonderful. And it
provides the UI (you know, the thing you know nothing about) to the
HW. I think you should go and look at one. Or an iPod touch. They really
are impressive.

Yeah. Idiots eh? All those millions of people queueing up. Who wants to
watch video, play games and music etc all on one device?

Go buy a clue. You surely can NOT be involved in SW development since it
seems you have ZERO idea about what people want.

I still laugh at Halliwell saying he prefers all the things on different
devices in case he got mugged .... LOL!

> Apart from that: Why run linux on it? Because they can

I can take a number 2 on a public bus seat but I don't.

Putting Linux on the iPhone and losing the HW is a pretty silly thing to
do for so expensive a device.

iPhone costs over $1000 because of contracts. People can toss it at eBay after
being ripped off... the lock-in can be stripped off it using Linux + layer
like Android (Java) and decent hardware be obtained forjust a couple of
hundreds of dollars this way.

Apple and AT&T tried to criminalise 'jailbreakers' for this reason.

IPhone Unlock Delayed After AT&T's 'Friendly Advice'

,----[ Quote ]
| Fear of litigation has led to an indefinite delay in the planned Saturday
| release of software to unlock Apple Inc.'s iPhone.
|
| John McLaughlin, founder of Uniquephones, based in Belfast, Northern Ireland,
| said Saturday that he received a phone call about 3 a.m. Saturday local time
| from a man claiming to be from O'Melveny & Myers LLP, an international law
| firm, calling on behalf of AT&T. The firm has worked with Apple in the past.
|
| The man informed McLaughlin that if he posted the unlock code, he could be
| sued for copyright infringement and for dissemination of Apple's intellectual
| property (IP).

iPhone Freed From AT&T, Twice

,----[ Quote ]
| The company will be selling licenses to the hack, minimum quantity 500, at a
| price not yet announced. These hacks are much bigger news for those outside
| America. Expect to see an industry spring up to meet European (and Asian?)
| demand for freed iPhones.

AT&T Welcomes Programmers for All Phones Except the iPhone
