Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5 reviews, complaints, glitch: Data bill when on Wi-Fi

Hundreds of iPhone 5 owners have been complaining in online forums about
huge, unexpected data bills during their first few days of owning the
phone.

It is occurring mostly for Verizon customers, but some AT&T users are
reporting the same issue as well.

Some complain that they have used a full month's worth of data in just a
couple of days, even though they were mostly using Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi May Be Burning Up Data

Apple is not commenting on the bug at this point.
...

CNN quotes a Verizon customer who said his son used 161 MB of data while
sitting in a college class and using the school's Wi-Fi network.

Second Major Glitch

This is the second serious glitch involving the new iPhone 5: the first
concerns the buggy Apple mapping system , which replaced Google maps.

Apple has already apologized for the mapping issue, saying it will soon
issue a software update to correct that problem.

Verizon urges anyone who notices unusual data fees on the new phone to
contact the carrier. It might be a good idea for AT&T users not on the
unlimited data plan to check their usage as well.

Yeah, a bug "fix" is in the works for Apple Maps. That'll fix the terrible
database. Uh, huh.

Note, no complaints from Sprint. Since they sell unlimited data plans no
one probably knows yet.

iPhone 5 Bug Results in Huge Bandwidth Bills
Some Carriers Not Eager to Take Blame

On Monday it was revealed that a bug in the iPhone 5 was resulting in the
device using cellular data even when connected to Wi-Fi, resulting in
users paying considerable overages. Though it appears to be a bug
impacting numerous carriers, Verizon Wireless has been the only company to
comment, saying they'll offer refunds to impacted customers. Apple hasn't
officially commented, though their website references the fix.

The bug has significantly impacted users internationally, and many phone
companies haven't been quick to offer refunds. One Australian user claims
to have been hit with a bill for six thousand dollars:

...the issue is still affecting Australian iPhone users, with many turning
to Apple's support page, the telco's own discussion forums, and broadband
forum Whirlpool for answers. One Whirlpool user said that using an iPhone
5, they had managed to use 5GB of data in a single week and had received a
bill from Telstra for AU$1,300. One Vodafone customer said that they had
used 20GB and was looking at a massive AU$6000 bill.

With Apple clearly not issuing refunds, and some telcos not eager to take
blame for an Apple bug, it looks like some impacted users may be out of
luck. ...

Scary good quality control there. That's why iCrap gets the "big bucks."

Pheew... I thought that wRonG was going to tell me that all of the data on
my iPhone can get completely wiped and the SIM card destroyed just by
visiting a web-page like 98% of Android phones out in the field.

<quote>
It turns out that the "Dirty USSD" exploit demonstrated yesterday on Samsung
devices affects ***all Android devices*** running anything below Android
4.1.x aka Jelly Bean.

During his presentation, Borgaonkar mentioned that the same attack can be
used to "kill" SIM cards.... ... vulnerable to remote wipe or permanent
destruction of the SIM card - if they haven't been updated since June.

He added that all Android devices running Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread), 3.x
(Honeycomb), 4.0.x (Ice Cream Sandwich) and 4.1.x (Jelly Bean) are
vulnerable to this flaw if they had not been updated since June.

The turdv idiot and his pretend BSEE degree.

Negative Feedback is good:
** Stabilizes amplifier against oscillation **
Increases the input impedance of the amplifier
Decreases the output impedance of the amplifier

Positive Feedback is bad:
** Causes amplifiers to oscillate **

It enables them to be designed with predictable, precise and **stable**
performance."

You forgot about the 3rd glitch.

Apple's response? It works as specified!

Apple have a total disregard for their customers. Whether it be
unreliable calls (you're holding it wrong), excessive battery use, ...

The peak in Galaxy S3 sales after the iPhone 5 launch just shows many
people waiting for the new Apple phone were under-whelmed by the
product.

If Apple spent as much time and effort on innovative products as they
do on litigation they might actually produce something that would
enable them to compete against top end Android phones.

If I remember correctly, Samsung spends over three times Apple's
percentage in R&D. It shows. Apparently Samsung has several more models
coming out, including a Galaxy 3S "Mini" (4" screen). And then, near the
beginning of next year, the Galaxy 4 S. They're not sitting on their hands.

Good. Competition is a good thing for all of us.

What is not good is when Samsung's R&D consists of seeing what Apple is
doing and copying it as much as they can.

Is that the total corporate R&D, or the R&D devoted to mobile
computing? Because, obviously, Samsung's product-line is vastly
broader than is Apple's, Samsung making everything from semiconductors
to refrigerators...
