This year, for my younger son who just graduated, I ordered a Dell
Inspirion netbook with Ubuntu. A fantastic package loaded with free
software (OpenOffice, DropBox,and much more) and a beautifully
customized interface for teens or non-techy individuals.
Runs straight out of the box.
Anyone underestimating the simplicity and elegance of either series of
Linux netbook is being foolish.

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which I ordered with Ubuntu, too.
The only hardware problems it's had have been my fault (like a broken
power adaptor), and it's had no significant software hiccups despite my
heavy handling of my operating systems, and any I have had, have been,
again, my own fault.
