I see a lot of posts about what would be necessary for encouraging
more people to "Linux" (i.e. a Linux distrubition). Obviously, for
current Windows users, a big factor would be the GUI. KDE, for
example, can be made to look very nice indeed, much nicer than I could
ever make Windows look without purchasing a third-party tool.

Here's a screenshot of my current desktop:
http://www34.brinkster.com/yahshell/ss.png

If anyone has any screenshots of their own, free free to share =)

Good idea, Roy. Excellent bit of advocacy,if I do say so myself.

Slick.

That's my desktop. It's big, becuase I have 3 heads. It's running
pekwm, version 0.1.3, with transparant Eterms, xchat, xmms, some
gkrells, and mozilla-firebird.

Firebird, xmms, and the gkrellms all have aqua themes to match the pekwm
theme I am currently using..

Very nice!

As for Firebird, it certainly looks slicker in that screenshot than
what I've seen of it on Windows.

How did he get the fonts to look so good?
The normal builds of firebird have god awful looking fonts.

Under Windows Firebird is fantastic.

I use Mozilla under SuSE Linux and it looks and performs great.
MUCH better than the Windows version in fact.

Good looking desktops, but has anyone looked at ergonomic issues.
This is an important. I have lots of ergonomic issues with MS desktops and
many Linux desktops. Some (default) color/refresh/font/iconRendering
schemes give me real headaches.
Anyone looking for a good MS thesis might look at some of these issues. It's
nice to be able to configure my own desktop, but a manufacturer needs to
install one desktop on all his product. One that looks good and doesn't
hurt after 8 hours in the pit.

Really?

So where do I find this thing?

I go to the mozilla.org site and download the windows version of firebird
and it looks and runs fine.

The Linux version looks terrible.

So where is this good version located?

based on reports of the 2.6 kernel,
i'm thinking of going back to Mozilla
from Firebird -- i like all the features,
but with 2.6 it sounds like it will
run fast...

Not if you override what the site picks with fonts that you like.

Of course, then it does not look like it might under IE.

I interestingly enough, I haven't done anything to this box, not one
thing, to improve the quality of the fonts. It's not really something I
put a lot of emphasis on. I am running with the defaults there.

And I'm not trying to be a jackass towards you, flatty, but I never
thought the day would come that I would hear you compliment the4 fonts
on a linux box. Thanks.

Either you faked this, or X transparency is really piss-poor.

Two things to note:

First, on the xterm on the upper left, note how the the shaded windows
behind it do not show through the transparency, yet the gentoo logo does.
This is a sure fire sign that it's not real transparency at all.

Second, on the xterm on the lower left, the one running top. Note how the
background is offset from the background around it. Even the Gentoo logo
is slightly off.

Okay, those are not xterms. They are Eterms. Eterms offer "artificail
transparancy" that displays the underlying desktop background.

I fail to see the point of such a feature. Real transparency has value, in
that it allows you to see what's going on behind your window. This fake
shit is pointless.

No. If I wanted real transparancy, I could have used aterm. I don't
want that, however. It wouldn't be best for me. What if I have 2 terms
overlapping each other. How do you expect me to read the text? How
would I determine which text is in which term?

Right tool for the right job, I always say.

What artifacts? The fact that I have it customized exactly the way I
like it? Customized in a fashion that is not only appealing to the
eye, but very functional at the same time?

Now I know that you're not able to change your desktop around quite as
much as the Linux users you see here, but that's not reason to throw a

Here's mine. I'm neither artistic nor big on glossy looks, so it's

The wm is xfce4, and sensitive viewers should be warned that there's
one of those fake-tranparency terminals (aterm) doing a fake admin
task as well.

I really try to make my desktop a place where I won't get headaches as
my job requires I code 8 hours a day plus whatever I do on my own (I
work from my home PC).

One thing I've found that REALLY helps is making sure all my text
editors have a black background with off-white (as opposed to pure
white) text. Sounds like a simple things, but it helps A LOT.

Here's a Shift-PrintScreen dump (converted to JPEG) from my Dell laptop

using RealVNC to access my Linux box where I was reading slrn (the WM

Perhaps you should seriously consider getting a clue before making an idiot
of yourself like this on a public forum.

KDE does not yet fully support XRender (for true transparency) so it is
emulated by redrawing the covered portion of the desktop's background in the
application's background window. If you're still skeptical, have a look at
http://kde-look.org where you'll see countless screenshots showing this
method of transparency.

It crossed my mind that a good advocacy project would be to set up a
public net-accessible linux desktop which people could use if they wanted
to have a look at the system before setting it up on their machine. You
could use vncserver to export the display, and people could view it either
through windows vncviewer or the java web applet vnc viewer. I don't think
I have the resources (I'd want to run it on a completely seperate machine
on a physically isolated subnet) or experience (mainly security questions)
to do a good job of this and not risk compromising my system, but if
anyone out there does it would be good if there was something like this on
the net. Might have to set time-limited access per IP address to stop it
getting overloaded.

... or you can opt to have an extremely poor looking desktop, which is
functional and tailormade to the way you work. Guess what, I'm a
minimalist, I hate unnecessary eyecandy and I like to avoid the mouse
whenever possible. Here is an import of my desktop (one of the five

Well.... you caught me. At least it proves that Linux does not make you
gay. I certainly don't use this background when I am working in an
office environment. I don't want to be accused of "objectifying" women.
My "Shakira" calendar did not go over very well at my last post. Yet
my cubiclle neighbour had a life sized poster of Ricky Martin. Go
figure.

Usually I use a background with a nice picture of my cat like so:
http://members.shaw.ca/michaelvester/snapshot2.png
So far, politically correct. But I am sure that some group with nothing
better to whine about, will find offense with this background.

I do that also, as far as I can. For my LSE (language sensitive editors), I
avoid any yellow or high saturation colors. On a black background, pink
stands out as well as full red. As a side benefit, that also seems to
extend battery life a bit on the laptop a minute or two.

It's not real transparency and never has been. All they do is show a dimmed
version of the desktop wallpaper as the background of the window. No alpha
blending, no compositing... just a quick cheat.

Now if you want something that looks 'cool', it's ok. But if you want
something that's actually functional... nope, that doesn't cut it.

As much as I dislike icons, I have to agree, those are slick.

Here's a screen of the desktop used by my boss. I took it while I was

Anyone know where I can find this one particular desktop wallpaper?
It shows a shattered Windows logo, and behind it is Tux, with a stone
in hand.

I saw this during my squadron's Annual Field Training, when another
guy in the barracks was showing us his laptop that was loaded with
Linux. That particular Tux picture was his wallpaper. I was also
rather impressed, BTW, when he booted Windows-2000 without leaving
Linux (via vmware).

I was quite impressed with the people involved in this year's AFT.
The majority of them were quite aware of Linux and were either using
it at home themselves, or were planning on trying it out. During
previous deployments, I have always been surrounded by a bunch of
Windows zombies. It sure felt great being in a Linux-friendly crowd
this time around. :D

Same for me for the most part, keep it simple, and clear. I want to get
stuff done, not look at the buttons.

As an aside, looks like you have a Dell laptop, you might want to
consider wmi8k for the dock, rather than i8kmon, it's a true dockapp,
and allows the same functions as i8kmon, with the addition of watching
the RPM speed of the fans. It's worked well for me, although earlier
versions had bugs. The latest has been quite stable and useful.

I need to work a few details out before I try putting it online. In

Looks fine, but if you are logging in as root, I'd recommend against it.
Far better to log in as a normal user, and su to root when you need to

I'll be creating a couple user accounts eventually. But right now,
this really isn't a major issue for me. The Linux system I'm working
on, I have designated as a Linux training and experimentation
station. So If I screw something up because I'm logged in as root, I
can simply wipe the system and start from scratch. Also, I don't
_think_ I'm at any significant risk from intrusions, because this
system connects to the Internet through a Win-98SE Lite system
running Zone Alarm Pro, which I have not ever had any problems with.
That system, BTW, will also eventually be getting Linux (RH9), once I
do a little more experimenting on the trainer. Only reason that one
is currently running 98SE now is because 98 has become real quick and
easy for me to set up. Took me about a 1/2 hour or so to have her
fully operational and set up for Internet Connection Sharing (cable
modem via the USB port).

I actually do have a hard drive set up with Linux for that one. I
just haven't had time to figure out how to configure a proxy server
or a firewall on it yet. So until I can set aside some time to
experiment, the Linux drive remains disconnected, and the Windows
drive remains operational. I'm actually looking forward to finally
getting him permanently operational with Linux, since that means I
can free up the Windows drive (4GB) for another project.

You can do much the same thing, by booting one of the firewall distros,
and answering a few simple questions. They don't even install to the HD,
so there's nothing to install per se. Coyote Linux, Openwall,
smoothwall, a couple of others. Some CD distros, Coyote Linux is, IIRC,
a single floppy distro.

No need to install a full sized distro like RH9 for a router/firewall.

Not running as root, is a good habit to get into, no matter how secure
you feel now.

As someone else pointed out, he seems to be a bit jealous. In the world
he lives in, it is not possible to customize 100% of his desktop
environment. That's a feature he would like, but since he cannot have
it, he throws insults and argues that people shouldn't use settings that
they prefer.

In his world, the UI is very standard. No desktops have personality.
It seems, in a round about way, that he's trying to push his favorite OS
by attacking the strongpoints of another.

The FUDsters are surely running short on ideas.

"Real" transparency very rarely has any real value, aside from
aesthetic value. Eterm's transparency presumably has some aesthetic
value, too, even if it's not as pretty as the "real" thing. It is
certainly computationally much easier, so that those who want it (me
included) can have the appearance of transparency without the cost of
perfect transparency.

The fake shit is pointless if you don't want it. In this respect,
your criticism is an echo of every criticism you have regarding
Linux. If anything was any good, Windows would do it the same way.
If Windows doesn't do it that way, then that's a bad way to do it.

Your opinion is dull, narrow and stupidly arrogant. Why don't you go
away again, little man?

Thanks! I most certainly will.

This isn't unusual for Ewik. He was pondering the uselessness of
multiple desktops when his precious WinDOS was being slammed for the
poor implementation they did. I pointed out that it's the only thing at
work that's nearly universally liked.

If Erik doesn't use/like/need it, it should be done away with
apparently.

I have true transparency already. And you're completely mistaken if you
believe I can't customize 100% of my desktop.

My desktop has quite a bit of personality. You're mistaken.

If I showed it to this guy, I'm sure he'd have an opinion.

<http://www.smilfinken.net/screenshots/xfce/gentoo_xfce4_mutt.png>

Problem with him is that he makes some of the text in the aterms hard
to read, and I'm not so fond of using the xor setting.

(Is it about time to rename this thread to "linux users and their pets"
yet?)

It doesn't appear that you can change your window manager. If that's
the case, the windows GUI is useless, and should simply be done away
with.

How much did the software to do that cost?
