In other news, some upgraders to the new flagship Ubuntu distro Karmic Koala

"nightmare."
"Microsoft is doomed by the Linux juggernaut."
I have been using Windows 7 and have been pretty happy with it - even with
its "warts". Here are just some:
Windowing oddities:

Does not show what is launching the full time it is launching:

Annoying stripes:

Inconsistent menu styles:

Inconsistent wording:

Also, high resource usage on window resizing and some others. But, still,
overall likely the best version of Windows yet.

That one almost got me as well.
It's normal.
If you drag the window and touch either the top or sides of the screen, the
window will contract or expand depending upon it's current state.
Kind of weird at first, but useful once you get used to it.
I have one problem and it's with 40Tude Dialog.
The bottom tool bar seems to come and go when I click the first message in
the message list.
Seems if I get too close it will re-thread the articles.
Moving the dividing line usually fixes it.
Annoying. I believe others have the same problem.

Oh, I get "Snap"... but why did it act like I was resizing it to touch the
top of the screen (and just stretch tall) at least once. And there are all
sorts of video glitches - though that could be from my running it in
virtualization?

Would be odd if you were the only one. :)

Because that's the way it works.
It re-sizes the window and depends upon the initial way the window is set
up. Also some windows can't be made any bigger than a certain size.
Can't say for the other problems though.
The window clearly can be maximized... but at least once it only stretched
it taller. It should do that when resizing and touching the top... not when
dragging to the top. At least that is what I have found with other apps...
at least the ones that work with "Snap".

the overall share of Windows 7 has already reached 4% in the computer
market. That number is as of November 9. Windows Vista needed six months to
hit the same 4% penetration rate. Windows 7 launched on October 22 and since
its launch, the use of the OS has grown by 84%.

So in 3-weeks Win7 has the same number of users as Vista did after 6 full
months. And Vista wasn't released during a world-wide economic recession
either.

Windows replaced with Windows... big deal.

The difference between a monopoly and a "market leader" is |||
that you can simply ignore a "market leader" and be no worse / | \
for it.
It is a big deal because virtually none of those people who went out and
bought Win7 are going to switch to Linux. For a while "desktop Linux" had an
opportunity during the Vista debacle - if Linux couldn't make any progress
at all in the desktop market during Vista then it sure isn't going to make
any progress with Win7 getting a warm reception.
That's preciously what makes it a big deal.
Linux had a golden opportunity handed to the community on a silver platter
and by Microsoft themselves.
It was called Vista.
Linux blew it.
Too many spinning cubes and wobble windows and not enough quality
applications to entice Joe User to jump ship.
...except they probably didn't "go out and buy Win7".
They simple bought a PC and Windows came along for the ride just as
it always does. It's like that Windows install on my Revo.

Nothing quite gives you an understanding of mysql's |||
popularity as does an attempt to do some simple date / | \
manipulations in postgres.
You should call Amazon and tell them about your "theory." According to
their own numbers they seem to believe that Windows7 is the biggest
pre-order item in the history of the company.
> They simple bought a PC and Windows came along for the ride just as

And you simply pull bullshit out of your ass and like to pretend it's some
sort of fact.
There are a number of problems with you blindling repeating that
particular bit of media hype. A) This metric you are repeating is based
on the pound value of the pre-orders and B) it's just for the UK version
of Amazon.
[deletia]
Even so. It's still a drop in the bucket in terms of global or even
UK PC usage numbers. Even Windows 95 (which even had a bigger hype
associated with it) still gained more marketshare from OEMs than overly
enthuastic retail customers.
