It's a well-kept secret, but the real Linux desktop market share is 12% to
13%.
And don't forget:
* "half of Europe dumped Windows"
* Linux "commands almost 100% of the desktop machines in China."

* Brazil switched to Linux

It is indeed, a requirement of being a wintroll.
Doofie is pretty slow on the uptick. He's slowing down even more as
time passes.
Yes, I *use* Windwoes at work. Have to.
Yes, I *maintain* Winders laptops at work. Almost 400 of them, in fact.
I don't use those though, I set them up for people who qualify as
"power users" (they can push icons around on the desktop, change the
screensaver, flip the colors around, etc) and "noobs" (they turn it on
and type, and they're scared to do much else unless being talked
through it). But I don't use the laptops except when trying to
experiment with why certain things aren't working right (for the
benefit of IT, for whom I've already had to find 2 fixes).
OK, so I touch Windross 8 hours a day (minus the parts where I do the
other 75% of my job, and minus the 5-10% I have linux going for my own
purposes), and I _use_ linux the remaining 16 (minus whatever other
things I do when not at work).
I'd say that sends a pretty clear message about the piss-poor "quality"
of WindUHs if I choose to use something else at the times I really have
a choice in the matter.
Perhaps DuFuS can find a child, say about 10, who can help him
understand advanced concepts like these.

maintain their own!

They laughed at Hitler too, until his brownshirts stormed the assembly
and forced the legislators to vote him supreme dictator of Germany.
After that, there were plenty of really evil people riding his coat-
tails, ready willing and able to kill about 18 million people in death
camps, and several million more in World War II.
Had the U.S. not come to the aid of Britain, or had Hitler decided to
Invade Britain before invading the USSR, we might have seen the Nazis
reign of terror expand to the Western Hemisphere, including the United
States, with about 1/4 of the population joining the Nazis to keep the
remainder in subjugation- along with the deaths of perhaps another
20-30 million in the United States.
Notice that Bill Gates gave himself nearly 1 billion shares of stock -
250 million of which he has sold off. It effectively puts Gates and
Ballmer in supreme control of a commodity which is now a critical part
of the lives of nearly 4 billion people - including those who share
the 1.5 billion computers now available in the world.
IF Microsoft had the ability to access all e-mail, files stored on the
computer, or other critical information, and was able to identify what
would cause problems for a particular user, they could, for example:
- forward e-mails from a liberal senator to a right wing conservative
prosecutor, to have that senator ousted.
- forward files from a special prosecutor's PC to right wing press and
discredit a president, assuring transfer of power to the opposition
party.
- forward financial records to the IRS - to discredit opposition.
- disseminate information that would alter the outcome of elections
around the world.
Then, the winners would show their gratitude by:
Adopting a non-enforcment policy in judgements already rendered.
Initiating anti-trust actions against mergers that threatened the
power base.
Mandate further adoption of the pervasive technology.
Block the dissemination of competing technology.
But wait, Microsoft DOES have that ability.
Leaks of information on supposedly secure PC WERE disseminated.
The BUSH Administration did adopt non-enforcement of the Antitrust
Judgement.
The Bush Administration did initiate antitrust proceedings against a
number of Microsoft's competitors including Oracle, IBM, and Google.
> Well, it's true. It's just a fact that monopolies are bad for the

During the DOJ Antitrust hearing, numerous exhibits showing fraud,
extortion, blackmail, sabotage, and obstruction of justice were
submitted. Microsoft's Defense Witnesses, including Bill Gates
admitted under oath to criminal acts. The answers were evasive for
almost 4 hours, but eventually Gates admitted in court to those acts.
In the OHIO vs Microsoft case, additional exhibits showed that
Microsoft had not reduced their criminal acts, but had in fact
increased the number of these acts, had further engaged in illegal
acts, and had forced licensees to agree that criminal acts were
permitted on their computers.
Microsoft now has the ability to disable ANY Vista based PC, and the
EULA permits them to do it, AND demand extortion payments.
The Vista EULA also permits them to access ANY information stored on
your PC and use it for ANY purpose.
People who buy the Vista PC and downgrade it to XP are still bound by
the Vista EULA.
Microsoft has added additional similar terms to support packs and
upgrades for prior versions of Windows.
End users, corporations, and OEMs have forfeited their ability to
choose alternatives because their infrastructure is not equipped to
support competitors' products such as Linux distributions.
True. Without Windows, /all/ businesses would be making more money than
they do now ;->

> <the Mother of all Godwinizations snipped>
Let me just bottom line this.
Microsoft is used on about 1.5 billion PCs.
Those PCs store critical business and personal information about;
The owner
The owner's employer
The owner's friends
The owner's customers and/or clients.
The owner's vendors and suppliers
Bids and proposals for customers and clients and from vendors and
suppliers.
The owner's coworkers, subordinates, and superiors.
The owner's personal e-mails and web browsing history.
There ARE well-known "back doors" which Microsoft considers strategic
"features".
ANYONE who knows how to exploit these back doors can:
Read ANY file on the PC.
Create ANY file on the PC.
Delete ANY file on the PC.
Send any file via passive FTP, http, or e-mail
Download and install applications that appear to be legitimate.
Provide bid and proposal information to competitors.
Get the owner fired.
Get a subordinate fired.
Leak information to the press.
Generate bogus e-mail from the owner.
Leak or generate bogus information to government regulators.
Leak information to political opponents.
Leak information to political allies that will cause them to
withdraw support.
Manufacture incriminating information, install it on the owner's
PC, and leak it.
All without the owner's knowledge.
There are computer trespassing laws which make such activities
illegal, but tresspassed system has to notify would-be trespassers
that this activity is illegal. Most Unix, Linux, and Mainframe
systems give such notifications when confidential access is
requested. Windows PCs don't even have the capability to give such
notice.
Windows security is STILL a serious problem with Vista and apparently
Windows 7, and the "script kiddies" have an even easier time infecting
systems now that Office 2007 is using OpenXML documents containing
executable binaries.
Script kiddies have grown up, many are in their late 20s and early
30s, and have found ways to sell confidential information to the
highest bidder, without giving away how they got the information.
They have also learned how to target specific candidates, which makes
it much harder for anti-virus writers to detects and purge such
viruses. Instead of infecting ALL computers they encounter, which
puts them on virus radar, they look for particular criteria, such as
organizations (using URL suffix), user names and e-mail addresses, and
other key elements. If the virus doesn't see what it's looking for,
it purges itself, eliminating the trace, making it invisible to anti-
virus writers.
In the past decade, we have seen repeated instances of confidential
information becoming publicly available, even though the information
was stored only on the computers of investigators who are not allowed
to disclose such information. They face a 10 year prison term for
disclosure of information related to active investigations.
Targets have included top leaders in the United States, England,
France, Germany, Japan, and South Korea. In particular, leaders who
attempted to prosecute or regulate Microsoft's monopoly activities.
Bill Gates has expanded his portfolio and lowered his "net worth
profile" by channeling funds through the Gates Foundation - avoiding
taxes, regulation, and publication of information related to
investments and holdings. Gates has always been effective at making
"high leverage" investments, and this includes buying good will and
political favors by supporting "charitable" causes such as fighting
AIDS in Africa, and immunizations for kids in 3rd world countries.
That gives him a lot of influence in not only those countries, but
among those in the "West" who support similar causes.
These could all be simple coincidences. Or they could be part of a
plan Bill Gates came up with in 1984 - described in some detail, and
appears to have implemented, with only Linux and OSS as opposition and
competition.
Those whom Gates has placed in power have revoked right to privacy.
Something as simple as purchasing an airline ticket gives the
governments of most countries the right to dig as deeply into your
personal life as they want. So that they can decide whether it's safe
to let you board the plane. Of course, if they see something they
don't like, they can stop anyone from getting on or off of the plane.
In 2004, they stopped Cat Stevens, Ted Kennedy, and several other
liberals from making major rallies in key states - by telling them
they couldn't get off the plane.
Leaks of Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards, and the Mayor of Detroit, and
the Governor of Illinois were orchestrated to influence not only
elections, but also to prevent Obama from naming potential enemies of
Microsoft to key positions such as Attorney General. Both Edwards and
Spitzer would have been great as Attorney General.
Blah-blah-blah.... so now *you* are bringing Hitler into the conversation.

I don't think anyone has ever claimed that.
I would claim that if and when a reasonable proportion of home users use
Linux then the viruses will come. It is trivially simple to get users to
run scripts or install corrupted .deb packages.
e.g Release an nvidia-optimized.deb and news will be around the linux
community in no time. Loads of people will run/install it when they hear
the promise of 10x faster OGL and DirectX support. By the time the hoax
is discovered it will be too late. Users and roots the world over will
have /etc/rcS.d entries or silent little cron jobs or ls replacements
ticking away. Which is of course where Tripwire comes in despite Willy
and Peter not having a fucking clue as usual.
Having said that, my Debian system is rock solid, I know it inside out
(you have to to use Linux IMO) and it is much more secure than my XP
primarily because I feel more secure because I know how it works. Some
COLA dweebs will try and turn that into some sort of anti Linux tirade
no doubt but, well, screw them and their nonsense.
Then by your admission linux is more secure than windows. Therefore the
statement "windows is full of holes" is a valid one.

mean Linux is totally secure either. It isn't.

Not really, however the vast majority of malware is distributed via
email. On a linux system that simply would not happen to the same
degree. Unless the x bit was suddenly done away with and everyone
started doing general tasks as root. Remember the biggest whammy with
malware isn't the determined hack - its the ridiculously simple script
kiddy approach that is doing the most damage.
