We put this question to Linus, asking whether this patch was something he
would be happy to include, even though it's from Microsoft. He replied:
"Oh, I'm a big believer in "technology over politics". I don't care who it
comes from, as long as there are solid reasons for the code, and as long as
we don't have to worry about licensing etc issues.
In fact, to some degree, I'd be more likely to include it because it's from
a new member of the community rather than less (again, I'd like to point out
that drivers are special. They don't impact other things, so they get merged
much more easily than some core changes).
I may make jokes about Microsoft at times, but at the same time, I think the
Microsoft hatred is a disease. I believe in open development, and that very
much involves not just making the source open, but also not shutting other
people and companies out.
There are 'extremists' in the free software world, but that's one major
reason why I don't call what I do 'free software' any more. I don't want to

I don't think that Linux sucks. What sucks are the morons and the idiots who
think that they are somehow "advocating" Linux by attacking people and
telling lies.
You make, as usual, unwarranted assumptions. 1) why should I care where
code comes from? I don't do a complete background check on other
submitters. 2) as I understand it which, of course, could be overly
simplistic, the contributions from MS are limited to enhancing
performance of Linux when run virtually on an MS system. Something which
is hardly likely to enhance many lives whether included or not.
Ray, I realise this is hard for you to believe - but Ezekiel was talking
about "advocates": You may or may not be an "advocate" but please stop
thinking posts are directed at you and you only. It doesn't work like
that in the real world.
And there you have it. It's why I hang out in COLA too. A recent team I
was working with on some mySQL data projects all popped in here for a
looksee and couldn't believe the "advocate" morons who think they are
promoting Linux and OSS.

He usually is reasonable. Whether he is "more reasonable" on this
issue is a matter of opinion. It's something that "reasonable" people
can disagree on.

Right. I do not recall any big negative reaction to the recent "M$
contributes Linux code" trolls. The reaction was pretty-much "oh
well".
The lying trolls, as you said, want to manufacture their own reality,
where the "zealous" advocates "freaked out" or something.
>Also, Microsoft has pissed off a lot of people over the years. It's not

Given that Microsoft has made big loud noises about patent violations
in Linux and have gone so far as to sue companies over trivial shit like
VFAT, I don't think that it's wise to ingore where contributions come
from. Infact I thought that after one of the previous patent shenanigans
that the kernel team implemented some sort of check on this sort of thing.
Does this give Microsoft another excuse to sue someone like TomTom?

Indeed.
Now perhaps you'd alsdo like to give me your "take" on this:-
http://www.osnews.com/story/21882/Microsoft_s_Linux_Kernel_Code_Drop_Result_of_GPL_Violation
The claim seems to be that MS were using Open Source components in
proprietary code, and thereby violating the GPL.
- and that they "made things right" by then Open-Sourcing the offending
code.
I think it's interesting but it's also orthogonal to the comments that Linus
made about people who use "free software" as a basis for exclusion and
hatred.

What a freak, Quack is. Lies his ass off, then demands proof of his

It's a bit of an absurd statement. It doesn't really matter that an "authority
figure you could readily appeal to" made the remark. The whole nature of
"Free Software" is that you can't exclude ANYONE. You can choose not to include
them some official version of the source but that's not "exclusion". MS is just
as free as anyone (nvidia, ati, vmware, Sun, some kid in germany) to make
modifications to the kernel (or drivers).
I did not assume it was directed solely at me. I did, however, assume
there might be at least one other person on the planet with a roughly
similar outlook on the issue.

Bearing in mind that at least some of the code in the Linux kernel that SCO
were suing IBM over was found to actually have been provided to the kernel
by Caldera before they became SCO you can never be totally sure any code
contributions won't later come back to bite you whoever provided them, even
riskier when the provider of the Code has previously made patent violation
threats against you.

The core FOSS community wishes people like Roy Schestowitz would just go
away because he is harming Linux far more than any MS fanboi ever could.
Roy has been told this many times by the movers and shakers in the FOSS

Because he believes that he knows better.

I think that the real criterion is whether the code has any value added by
keeping it hidden. In this case the code is for the purpose of using Linux
within the Hyper-V environment. Disclosing the code gives no advantage to
any Microsoft competitor and only serves to keep Windows more valuable in
that it has that function available to it.
Someone who might lose a commercial advantage by disclosing code source in
some other circumstance might be much more interested in pushing back.
That will not get him into the record books, I fear. He will have to do
something far more uncommon.
He basically did.
The beauty of it is to look at the credibility, respect and influence that
someone like Linus has compared to something like a Schestowitz. Is there
any comparison at all as to who is taken seriously by the computing
industry and who is a sad joke.
Then look at their "philosophy", attitude and views towards things like
this. Who would 99% of the world consider to be a reasonable individual and
who would be viewed as a total lunatic a-hole.
>Oh? How about these, asshole
