It's amusing watching the Freetards cut off their nose in order to spite
their face.

First the freetards turn against Novell and Suse Linux. Now the freetards
are turning against Ubuntu - the distro which had the best chance of
actually getting some consumer desktop installs.

Every time a distro becomes viable for consumer desktops - the freetards
turn against it. Microsoft ought to be paying you guys for sabotaging
Linux.

People are turning against Ubuntu's inclusion of Mono/C# in the default
install, and it's a valid concern for the future usability of the
distro. I also don't see what this thread has to do with the Ubuntu mono
debate. Grow up.

It has nothing at all to do with the ubuntu debate. If ubuntu gains
traction then good luck to them. Anyone who is concerned about patent
torpedoes can steer clear. The beauty of choice.

Linking Linux to Microsoft is the only that shitware will succeed on the

Canonical is backed by a very rich man. I'm sure their legal positioning is
somewhat different, not only from that of a Linux end-user, but from that of
a conventional business (e.g. Asus) trying to leverage desktop Linux.

Perhaps the Zekester considers Shuttleworth to be a "freetard"?

And if they are, what has it got to do with this thread?
In which everyone is pointing at dell and laughing at their fuckups and
wondering "should shuttleworth sue for defamation?"

At least SuSE came with a thick reference manual, to absorb the
bullet. One would wake up feeling fully rested. Actually prior
to the Novell takeover, the manual was very useful, I needed no
other references.

I have version 8 box. From back in the days when you could go to Best

It won't. It's the *same* nonsense, year in and year out - copy stuff
from help forums into the advocacy group, as "proof" that Linux isn't
perfect, that it's "slopware". Chide the advocates for being so
"foolish" as to believe that Linux is perfect, as if we think anything

Exactly. And don't forget to mention, that with this copying of help
messages -- most of which get solved -- there is the constant rant about
how "no one knows about or cares about Linux." Apparently no one except
for ranting trolls, who drool on about it 24/7.

I set up a computer for a lady at church. She needed something for email
and writing and I had some Pentium IIIs lying around. I thought about
installing Linux, but she specifically wished for Word, as that's what
she was used to, at work.

The most frustrating thing for me -- since I hardly work with Windows
anymore -- was the wait between the time Windows *looks* like it's ready
to go, and the time where you can actually do something. I'm not sure if
Linux loads faster (I'm pretty sure it does, but not sure) -- but at the
very least, when Linux comes up to the Desktop, it is ready to use
IMMEDIATELY. Why can't Microsoft have the good sense to load the
drivers, etc., *before* showing the Desktop?

I'm very, very happy I don't use Windows anymore. My only frustration is
that I have to support others' Windows addiction.

Speaking of which -- my wife's computer is still dropping back to the
"hal" error about twice a week. I'm guessing it has something to do with
the Dell recovery partition, but not positive. You look it up on Google
and there's a whole software industry just for Windows registry repair.

I also notice that for both configuration sections (Ubuntu or XP) the site
shows the OS is included in the price yet if you specify identical hardware
(which means adding 40 to the linux machine to change hard drive to the
160gb unit fitted to the XP machine - all other specs are already
identical) then the XP machine still costs 10 more than the Ubuntu one.

I notice the customise section for the ubuntu machine has 'Move to XP
version' on the OS page yet the XP version lacks the 'Move to Ubuntu'
option - a little biased there. I also see Dell recommends Windows Vista
Home Premium on all the pages for these machines yet none of them are
available with it pre-installed, don't Dell really believe in what they
recommend to their customers then.

I also notice the Ubuntu machine has a choice of hard drive sizes - 8gb or
16gb solid state or either 120gb or 160gb SATA (pointless as both 120gb and
160gb add 40 to the price - as does 16gb solid state so who'd choose the
120gb option) yet the XP machine is only available with 160gb SATA, a sign
that DELL realises Windows is bloatware perhaps.

Quite why neither version are available with external optical drive is a bit
of a mystery - surely DELL are missing a bit of profit there - they also
give buyers of either machine an offer to buy extra software and it's all
Windows software supplied on either CD or DVD so unlikely to be of use to
the Ubuntu buyers and unusable on the XP machine too unless Dell
Pre-install it (without being sold a DVD drive buyers can't load the
install discs - not much good if it's your only PC) and curious to know how
they pre-install Windows Apps on the Ubuntu version.

Both versions also give buyers the option pay extra for PC online training -
however quite how useful Visto Home Premium Training is for buyers of
either machine is debatable.

Can't help wondering if anyone at DELL really understands what they're
selling - whichever netbook you choose you're offered extras to buy that
are totally useless to you.

I don't have that problem at all.
Sounds like you are low on RAM.
Windows performs poorly in that case and will act very slow.
Going from 512mb to 1G makes a huge difference.

Because doing that would make it obvious that Windross takes forever to
boot. The way it is now a lot of Windummies fall for the smoke and
mirrors version of events, believing it boots up in mere seconds.

Proof once more that you *can* fool some of the people all of the time.

So how do you explain that it has fooled 90 percent of the

I know. He needs to get a life and stop using the Ubuntu forums just to
find examples of why he thinks Linux is "slopware" and "crapware".

Then again, I'm replying to the person who plonked me for making a point

Pretty much EVERYONE has always been indifferent to Linspire and Xandros.

They just didn't capture anyone's imagination.

Unlike Lemmings and Cheerleaders, we actually want to know what the shiny

even vfat has something going for it.

Verily I say unto thee, that RonB spake thusly:

> Why can't Microsoft have the good sense to load the drivers, etc.,
> *before* showing the Desktop?

This is a deliberate design decision, introduced with Win98 IIRC, with
the specific goal of giving the false impression that Windows boots
faster than it really does.

GNU/Linux does it the other way round ... it loads all the services etc.
/before/ launching the desktop GUI. That's a more honest and useful
approach. Also the specific /order/ in which services are launched can
be controlled, unlike with Windows - where the net result is a mess of
applications and other services waiting for other services they depend
on, and often hanging or even crashing as a result.

I remember, for example, that it used to be a crapshoot which, if any,
taskbar applets would show up correctly each time I booted XP.
