Previously it had the XCFE Fedora spin, but it was a bit slow to
connect/disconnect/scan with the Broadcom wifi card, and the slowness is
evident only using the Linux closed source driver (I read).
So I purchased a Intel N 1000 1/2 height mini pci card but it wouldn't work,
so I then tried the latest Ubuntu 10.10 .... BIG MISTAKE.
One negative feature with the HP 5102 is that it has no WiFI ON/OFF switch,
but uses a HP application under Windows 7, that sets some hardware bit on
the netbook, and which naturally, isn't available with Linux.
After running up Ubuntu 10.10 I discovered to my dismay, that no wifi
adaptor would work. The Broadcom card, the Intel N1000 and a RT73 USB dongle
were all greyed out.
Even worse, nothing worked when I ran the previously working Fedora install.
This has something to do with the application RFKILL, I believe, but RFKILL
is unable to re-enable the now permanently disabled WiFi devices.
I guess Ubuntu 10.10 managed to set the hardware bit that disabled the WiFi
system, but was unable to unset it.
Otherwise, 10.10 was quite nice, and everything else worked.
So in desperation I tried MEEGO, to see if it would re enable my now
disabled WiFi, and it did!
Although the install was a total no brainer and all automatically completed
in about 15 minutes, I did have to use a external USB DVD drive as the HP
5102 BIOS doesn't like MEEGO on a USB stick for some reason.
MEEGO is now running on the 5102, on a 60GB SSD, and I've had time to play
with it. It seems well thought out, and is very easy to use unlike UNR,
which I've always disliked (just a personal thing).
Wifi with the Intel N 1000 card is almost instant, audio is great, video is
smooth, suspend and resume works flawlessly. The touch pad 'tap' to select
works, as does scrolling and mousing.
I'm sure I'll discover some problems in time, but I think MEEGO is a winner,
and is bound to start showing up on $90 eBAY touch pads any day, if it
hasn't already.
MEEGO is based on Fedora, and uses YUM etc, so under the hood, it seems to
be standard Linux based, which appeals to me.
This is the live distro I installed, which uses Chromium as the browser.

Rather confusingly, Nokia's new mobile OS is called Maego.
There is, however, good news (from early September).

Now, what will be interesting is how long it takes
for the Linux Driver Project to implement the Open driver
and how long it takes the various distros to propagate that.

other than the total clusterfsck where nothing worked including new hardware
you bought not working - "otherwise it was quite nice"
that is like saying "other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the
play?"
or it is like going on vacation to a shit-hole like Mexico, getting robbed,
raped and beaten by drug lords while being forced to eat dirt. "Otherwise,
my vacation was quite nice."
BAWAWAWWAAAAA!!!!

The Linux Challenge:
You get a PC with a blank HDD
and a distribution disk from the provider of your OS.
That's it.
Now, see how far you get "installing your OS".
simple bozo - a fresh install of Win7-64 went perfectly on my desktop.
sound - check
nvidia video - check
built in nic - check
usb - check
not really all that complicated or difficult. it is not like I was trying to
install linux or something.

These posts really show the character of the troll... a homophobic
racist.
Perhaps we can use One snot's logic and call *all* Windows users
homophobic racists. Nah, we're not stupid and ignorant like One snot.

Yep.. One snot is definitely a simple bozo.

That's understandable, because windows is such a brain dead, lacklustre, and
dysfunctional POS.

I wasn't able to get my Nokia S60 to tether with Meego so far, but otherwise
it has been excellent.
As Meego is a live CD/USB key, just give her a demo ?

How silly.

I thought MeeGo was the combination of Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo?

Yes, you're right. I didn't realise that it was being targeted towards
x86 as well.
The Samsung "N" series of netbooks do that too, but fortunately also
have a BIOS setting to turn Wi-Fi on and off, so it's not as bad.
Another odd thing I noticed about them is if you dual boot (as I did
when first setting it up) the machine does a double-reset each time you
switch operating systems, whereas if you keep rebooting into the same OS
then it just boots straight in. It seems as though the hardware is
"adjusting" itself for different operating systems somehow. I'm not sure
if that's a good or bad thing: certainly I haven't noticed any bad
consequences, but it's completely undocumented and thus rather
suspicious. What, if anything, is actually being "changed"?
As for Win/soft-hardware, i.e. hardware that needs to be "activated" by
Windows, personally I think it should be banned for unfairly tying to a
third-party. All hardware should be completely OS agnostic. Period.

Desktop Linux vs. Windows 7
Windows 7
Installing Windows was surprisingly easy. In just a few short steps, Windows
was installing. Previous versions of the operating system have always been
reasonably simple to install, but Microsoft has done an excellent job with
Windows 7.

Dunno about that, as it's built on Fedora, and uses a modified XFCE (I
think).

Yes, I think its being targeted towards *everything*.

That would be great, sadly the 5102 bios doesnt have such a switch. Shame on
you HP!

Beats me, I don't dual boot, tho I have XP Pro that runs under Linux
(Virtualbox) to access a couple of windows-only apps.
It's ironic that I have to run XP under Linux, to update my ToMTom GPS,
which itself, runs embedded Linux.

Well, he's obviously disturbed, and this explains why. It's not his

DanC is a guy from AOLU (Ubuntu NG). Who has been criticized (also by

Yet he explained that the sig is supposed to be a joke and should not be

So I felt I had to apologize to DanC.

DanC thought that he could take me on. It was not about Linux or MS or
anything else. I stumped the shit out of DanC over there in
24hoursupport for 2 days straight. He wanted to take me, and I stumped
the shit out of him every which way but loose. He has no trash-talk game
period. He thought he had game, until I stumped the shit out of him and
watched him crawl away. :) He's got a D- game if that.
I especially liked this reply of DanC to the insane "Hadron" Quack troll,
which he posted quite some time ago when Hadron was in AOLU (around 2007 or
08 IIRC) & claimed to use Linux:
"You wouldn't know a linux module if it shit in your mouth"
Even those that disliked DanC were laughing at that!
He might be a troll, but he sure does nail the wintrolls!

Why? Kicking "Hadron" is like kicking a puppy.

This is the first numerical problem I ever did. It demonstrates the
power of computers:
Enter lots of data on calorie & nutritive content of foods. Instruct
the thing to maximize a function describing nutritive content, with a
minimum level of each component, for fixed caloric content. The
results are that one should eat each day:
1/2 chicken
1 egg
1 glass of skim milk
27 heads of lettuce.

Reading even a quote of his posts is as unpleasant as discovering dogshit
