Jack, of course, is not the audio system, but a CD ripper.

Genisoimage is soft-linked to mkisofs.

Wodim is cdrecord revisited.

All command-line apps.

A very easy way to collect eclectic Christmas music and burn a disk. On a
64-bit system, very fast.

Who needs Windows? Who even needs a GUI? :-)

Oh, I almost forgot faad and lame, to convert m4a to mp3. Also
command-line.

Jack is of course not a CD ripper but a frontend to CD-rippers.
It seems to default to the second-best backend (cdparanoia) and
does not yet know how to call cdda2wav in paranoia mode although
cdda2wav supports paranoia mode since May 2002. Since cdparanoia
is still based on a cdda2wav version from 1997, cdparanoia does
not read typical "un-CDs" mase by the music mafia while cdda2wav
has no problems with reading such disks.

>Genisoimage is soft-linked to mkisofs.

genisoimage is a defective variant made from a very outdated mkisofs
version. genisoimage creates filesystem images with many structural
defects. There is no support for UTF-8 and no support for files >= 4 GB
in genisoimage. It is not recommended to use genisoimage. Be careful
not to be fooled by symlinks that point to defective software. The well
maintained original software is here:

ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

>Wodim is cdrecord revisited.

wodim is a defective variant made from a very outdated cdrecord version.
wodim does not properly support DVDs and it is fooled by many well
known firmware bugs in typical recent drives. Be caresul not to be
fooled by symlinks that point to defective software. The well maintained
original software is here:

ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

You do. You program Windows. Or did you forget that?

People generally don't want command line. They want to gather, sort and
prioritise with a point and click more often than not. What planet are
you from? Sure command line scripts have their place for batch
processing and one off things. But really. lets get some sense here.

Look, if you don't know about something then why post. I realise with so
many people not posting you feel you can get away with your rash claims
an insults, but you really can't.

Thanks for the info, Jrg.

Apart from a silly bug introduced into genisoimage, though,
I've gotten great service from jack+cdparanoia, genisoimage, wodim, and
growisofs.

It also looks like the real situation with charsets is a bit more complex
than you describe.

Lol. The irony of talking about encoding.

Basis for this grasp in the dark?

What are you talking about?

You really are a clueless idiot. Why do you bother posting. Its far
easier to gather and sort in a custom built gui container for most
people. hence things like crystal reports, phpmyadin, mysqladmin, zabbix
web interface, cubs web interface etc etc etc. Come back when you have a
clue eh?

Poor "Hadron", doesn't even know that there's a python wrapper
for cdparanoia and lame that rips from CDs and creates oggs or mp3 files,
all tagged with CD data, ready to plop onto a data CD or a playlist,
and it is called "jack".

Confusing to "Hadron", of course, who is one who cannot correctly parse and
then reproduce the postings of others.

I "need" Windows for my job. But even for Windows, I don't need a GUI to
build code. Apparently "Hadron" never heard of nmake, or even of calling
devenv from the DOS command line, with a project/solution file as an
argument. And for source code control, Rational ClearCase works better from
the command line than it does from a GUI.

And, shoot, I build and test most of my "Windows" code from Linux anyway.

So I don't have a hell of a lot of need for a GUI even in Windows (though
the GUI is inescapable in Windows).

(Now let's watch "Hadron" bollix *that* whole concept.)

In any case, I was talking about ripping and burning from the command-line.
Not building code. Once again, "Hadron" wanders off the tracks, like the
Little Engine That Couldn't. Windows trolls are easily distracted into
talking about Windows.

I do ripping and burning from the command-line only. On Linux only.
And I'm quite sure many people in the ng do the same.

Jeez, a guy can't even talk about his own usage of tools without
"Hadron" trying to shit all over his post with irrelevant and incorrect
garbage.

jack?
Isn't jack the Linux jack audio connection kit?

jack vs jack seems quite confusing to me.
Will the real jack please stand up?

That too.

Yeah. I was just jibing "Hadron".

> Will the real jack please stand up?

Well, jack (the ripper) is old python code, stopped development in 2004.
But it still works.
