Will the gentoo installer configure my such and such hardware for me?
No. The installer will only do what is covered in the install guide. The
only thing that may be configured for you is xorg. When the LiveCD boots
into X, a xorg.conf is automatically generated. If you choose xorg-x11 (or
anything that depends on it) as an extra package to install,
the /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the LiveCD will be automatically copied into
your new install.

Absolutely nothing. The goal of the installer is to make installations
faster, not easier. The original intention was to make an installer for
doing automated deployments. While we still have this in mind, the end user
aspect took precedence (mainly because it's prettier).

Seems it ain't quite ready for prime time yet.

I have done installs from stage 1 ... though most of the time I do a stage 3
install to save time (I did a stage 1 on an old pentium 166 laptop ... took
7 days to complete the base install !!!)
It is good to get a base installation setup without having to sit in front
of the console waiting to start the next phase of the install.
I can start it and walk away.
Though if you normally customize the install you will not use the GUI
Installer.
I would only recommend this to those experienced Gentoo users that are doing
multiple workstation installs and want to reduce time.

Kind of rules me out, given that I am not an 'experienced' linux user yet,
nor am I a Gentoo user. Having said that this distribution does interest
me, and I watch the developments with interest.

I installed RR4Linux using the CD install method of installing what was on
the CD, and it installed Gentoo just fine. However, I just don't like all
that compiling going on to install/update. I prefer a binary based system
like Kubuntu.
